      Verizon’s Embrace of LTE

      Friday, November 30th, 2007

Verizon Wireless’ decision to use long-term evolution technology could make life, well, interesting for Nortel.
LTE is technology supported by the GSM community - a market where Nortel has a minor presence. At first blush, this suggests that Verizon’s decision could be bad news for Nortel.
The silver lining, however, is CDMA (the technology used within Verizon’s [...]

BSNL Looking to Award $910M contract

      Monday, November 26th, 2007

The last time Nortel aggressively waded into India, it ended up losing more than $260-million on a GSM/GPRS deal to expand Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd.’s wireless network - a project pushed by ex-CEO Bill Owens despite the objections of ex-COO Gary Daichendt, who correctly believed it was an uneconomic proposition.
Since then, Nortel has taken a [...]

      Wi-Max, Anyone?

      Thursday, October 25th, 2007

There’s an interesting - and somewhat breathless - story in yesterday’s Globe & Mail looking at the exciting future of Wi-Max, which “promises to do what the cellphone did for phone calls”.
While I love the concept of Wi-Max (high-speed wireless connectivity to compete against the cablecos and carriers), let’s just see how the technology can [...]

Will Sprint Kill its Wi-Max Strategy?

      Wednesday, October 10th, 2007

For many telecom equipment suppliers, including Nortel, there has been a concerted strategic focus on Wi-Max given its potential to create high-speed wireless networks.
At the forefront of the Wi-Max “revolution” has been Sprint Nextel, which plans to spend $5-billion over the next three years - a staggering investment - to build a Wi-Max network in [...]

      Good Times Ahead for Wi-Max

It looks like Wi-Max is starting to gain some momentum - at least in the eyes of the mainstream media judging by a feature story in BusinessWeek featuring Intel executive VP Sean Maloney.
The story looks at the Wi-Max industry and the role that Intel is playing to promote the wireless technology as an alternative to [...]

      Nortel’s Wi-Max Dreams

      Wednesday, August 15th, 2007

Light Reading has an in-depth story looking at Nortel’s ambitious Wi-Max strategy following a presentation at Nortel’s Maidenhead site in the U.K.
With $100-million of R&D spending now on Wi-Max, it is clearly a major strategic priority for Nortel. However, Heavy Reading analyst Patrick Donegan has his reservations in light of the fact Nortel has [...]

      Nortel’s Wireless Plans Applauded

      Wednesday, July 18th, 2007

InformationWeek’s Frank Bulk offers up good reviews for Nortel’s strategic focus on providing wireless solutions to the enterprise market, especially the offering of Wi-Fi technology.
“The introduction of 802.11n offers it a window into the enterprise Wi-Fi market. As the broader market reconsiders the previous Wi-Fi generations’ centralization of the data plane, it makes perfect [...]

      Alcatel-Lucent Gets Cricket Love Too

      Wednesday, July 11th, 2007

Cricket Communications is clearly spreading the wireless love around.
In addition to awarding contracts to Nortel ($135-million) and Huawei (undisclosed), the company also gave Alcatel-Lucent a $126-million contract to supply it with CDMA200 and EV-DO Rev A equipment.
Looks like we could have a CDMA showdown between Nortel, Huawei and Alcatel. Let’s see who chirps the loudest [...]

      Huawei Wins Cricket Contract Too

      Tuesday, July 10th, 2007

Now this is curious: A day after Nortel announced it had won a three-year, $135-million contract with Cricket Communications, Huawei said it has reached a deal with sell CDMA2000 1X, EV-DO Rev A equipment to Cricket as well.
It looks like Nortel and Huawei are selling the same kind equipment to Cricket, which appeared [...]
