Nortel Sells U.K. Wireless Unit

Nortel has sold a wireless unit in Harlow, England to Wireless Technology Laboratories Ltd., a subsidiary of Ace Technologies Corporation.

Nortel acquired the Harlow laboratories, originally Standard Telecommunications Laboratories, in 1991 and used the site for R&D.

It was the site of Charles Kao’s research in fibre optic communications. Kao was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics in 2009.

The deal involves 28 engineers focused on areas such as Power Amplifiers, Remote Radio Heads, advanced BTS antennas and WiFi networks.

    haha – research in fibre optic communications inlcudes improving data retention, so I suppose some kind of bonus is in order.

    Ace is doing well with a few hundred million revenue for a 12 year old company.

    Nortel was lucky to have had Mr. Kao. Educated in China, no wonder Huawei is growing than disappearing.

    I don't think that Professor Kao ever worked for Nortel. He worked for STL which Nortel acquired as part of the purchase of STC PLC in 1990/1991.

    [Wikipedia incorrectly states that Nortel acquired STC in 1989. This is based on a link to a Nortel web oppage. Not true. The bid to acquire STC was announced in October 1990 an closed in 1991 as far as aI can recall.]

    Professor Kao received his high schol education in Hong Kong.

    He then atteneded Woolich Polytechnic in London for his Bachelors degree and then earned a PhD from University College London while working a STL Harlow.

    His father also attended University outdside Aisa, in the US.

    However his roots to Asia seem to remain strong:

    Kao joined the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) in 1970, to found the Department of Electronics, which later became the Department of Electronic Engineering

    Kao was Vice-Chancellor of the Chinese University of Hong Kong from 1987 to 1996

    From 1993 to 1994, he was the President of ASAIHL (The Association of Southeast Asian Institutions of Higher Learning

    In 2000, Kao founded the Independent Schools Foundation Academy (ISF), which is located in Cyberport, Hong Kong.[26] He was its founding Chairman in 2000, and stepped down from the Board of the ISF Foundation in December, 2008.[26]

    Kao was the keynote speaker at IEEE GLOBECOM 2002 in Taipei, Taiwan.[27] In 2003 Kao was named a Chair Professor by special appointment at the Electronics Institute of the College of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, National Taiwan University.[27]

    Kao has been suffering from Alzheimer's disease since early 2004 and has speech difficulty, but has no problem recognizing people or addresses.Kao's father also suffered from the same disease. Kao's father Kao Chun-Hsiang, was a lawyer, who obtained his J.D. from the University of Michigan Law School in 1925.
