Nortel Shares the Wealth…With a Few

Imagine if you one of the thousands of people who were dismissed by Nortel over the pass year without a single penny of severance. Imagine if you were one of the 400 Nortel employees on long-term disability were had take a buy-out recently rather than risk losing all of their benefits.

Then, imagine how pissed off you might be upon learning that Nortel plans to pay $97.3-million over the next two years to keep nearly 1,500 employees.

As hard it might be to believe, Nortel said in a court filing earlier this week that it needs these employees until the end of 2011 to provide business, human resources and manufacturing co-ordination contracts, as well as people to handle the closure of operations, selling real estate and handling creditor claims.

But wait, there’s more.

According to a story by the Ottawa Citizen’s Bert Hill, three senior executives within Nortel’s U.S. operations will be receiving new employment contracts and up to $3.3 million from the incentive plan.

Christopher Recaute, the new president of Nortel Business Services will receive $2.5 million in incentives; Donald McKenna, vice-president of supply chain and real estate, will receive $400,000, and John Veschi, chief intellectual property officer, will get $350,000. They also were awarded pay packages of $400,000 to $600,000 each, and the right to other incentive bonuses of up to 100% salaries.

It really makes you wonder about whether Nortel plans to operate under bankruptcy protection for another two years.

More intriguing is whether this is yet another indication that Nortel could re-emerge as a company focused on business services, as well as a patent licensing and royalty entity.

did you expect anything different, really? nice way to get promotions though.

So – when there are only 12 people left working at Nortel…Is
THAT when you will kill-off this (now) unnecessary blog ?

    MC

  • techorama

MC, stop reading it if you are getting no value from it….there's plenty of other blogs to go to. For the rest of us, thanks Mark for the most public exposure of one of the biggest corporate scandals in Canadian history. All the time stuff like thiis continues to happen….the public need to be made aware if it.

  • wasthere

Bottom line : even under bankruptcy law some smart asses will still be allowed to suck creditors money big time. These average managers(Don McKenna, you can take it personal !) have it maid !

  • stone151678

you just shut up. you don't have to read it. Stupid Moose.

  • stillatnortel

I'm not in NBS, but I agree with NBS folks getting an incentive plan to stay. NBS has a job to do to support the acquisitions. Folks remaining in NBS know their job will be ending at some point. Providing incentive for them to stay until the end only makes sense. If not, how would NBS live up to the contracts they have now with the acquiring companies?

  • iwannabelieve

We should keep this blog going.

I do not agree with all the posts in this blog. Some are speculations, and some are just random comments from angry and disappointed ex-Nortel employee. But this is a place for us to share our thoughts. We should be thankful that we are able to do that. Some countries would block the whole thing, or even hack in your account and prosecute you for saying what you think.

Thanks Mark for providing this platform. And like others said, if you find this blog stupid or offending you, please exercise your freedom of not reading this.

    A pox on their genitals!

  • notthereanymore

Well, well – here we go again, Nortel. Giving out heaps of cash for employee retention when in this economy, they should be simply lucky the have a job, let alone a job that continues to double their income on a bi-annual basis. How long has Christopher Recaute been an employee at Nortel for and how much is he making and why would he need extensive retention bonuses to keep him there? Should we all go and ask for our jobs back to help offset the load instead of them working less for more as the company unwinds? Why doesn't Nortel just pay severances when they are doing ludicrous salary bonuses just for showing up and doing a day's work? Where is the justice? It would be hard pressed for any of them receiving these types of retention bonuses to go out and find a job in this market – instead they are working for a speedy retirement just to hang in there.

  • TongueInCheek

In the same article it also stated:

Nortel said that 88 per cent of the special incentives will be paid from revenues from transition service agreements with Ericsson, Ciena, Avaya and other companies buying Nortel product lines over the next two years

Given this, the impact to creditors is limited. Clearly Nortel will cease to exist at some point in the future after completion of the various Transition Services Agreements and final disposition of Real Estate etc. Unfortunately, it now looks like sometime in 2012 before creditors will receive their share of the estate. Not much reason to force Nortel to exit protection if this is going to be the end-state.

At least you now know that you can preserve your advertising revenue stream from this blog for another 22 months.

As a defrauded redundee from December 2008… Nortel HR and Finance knew exactly what they were doing, because Ernst and Young had already advised the executive what to do in Oct/Nov 2008… I am getting to the point where the reasons for my Military Medical Discharge are coming into play … Mild Adjustment Disorder… MAD… and I feel a relapse coming on . I might just be tempted to fail to adjust and start taking it out on the conspirators in this outrageouse fraud being given credence and legality by the mal-administration of Ernst and Young

  • duffdeal

If your chasing Moose, how do you find time to read? In fact, how did you find the time to learn in the first place?

  • wasthere

Shows you again how 'business made complex and costly' was Nortel's 'way' during all those years. Now even the closure can't be done with efficiency and at a minimum of cost. I always said that it was a good place to work(money wise) but not to invest. This company is dying the way it lived ; most of its revenues were(are) spent and waste inside the walls !

I feel sorry for Moose Chaser.

Judging from Moose Chaser's posts he/she has the brain of a 2 or 3 year old. Such a brain can only understand their own point of view and not those of others.

Just because you have managed to pull out of this mess without any trouble does not mean that others have gotten clear.

  • exNTII

i can bet people in NBS will stay as long s they can. who will hire them in this economy. its not like companies are hiring grads even before they finish college due to shortage.

    http://www.theglobeandmail.com/report-on-busine…

“Nortel said it had no plans to sell its wireless patent inventory, but the company has come under increasing pressure from lenders, suppliers and stranded pensioners to salvage more money from the broken company.”

Since Nortel filed for protection from its creditors last year, it has collected more than $3-billion in net proceeds by selling its various divisions to bigger foreign competitors. The company has $4.5-billion of long-term debt and owes billions of dollars more to suppliers and its underfunded pension plans.

If the company moves to sell the patents, experts warned that the company should act quickly because patent protections eventually expire.

“Every month that they delay selling these, the value decreases,” said Jennifer Pigg, vice-president of enabling technologies at Yankee Group. “My question, is ‘Why now?' Why didn't they start selling these off when they first started selling off the divisions?”

    ________________________________________________________

Why didn't they start selling these off when they first started selling off the divisions?”

Why? It was the last remaining asset unassociated with costs, one they thought they could gravy train a plan to keep paying themselves longer… money in salaries and bonuses that will further be taken from the value of these “so-called” valuable but “expiring” patents as I belly ached about earlier.

Finally I hear talk of “expiring”. Now, what about my bellyaching about the value of these “so-called” valuable patents given their ever so short development time. A time after selling UMTS to Alcatel where they thought they would “leapfrog 3G” if you recall.

They can't these rapidly depreciating and eventually expiring assets to anyone to even maintain let alone grow sales. Yet they hold them out last in ponder because of the no associated costs!

It is a ploy they will try to milk the company even further but their power to exercise ultimatum here diminishes, unlike fraud /pensions settlements or bonuses to run the company after bankruptcy, etc., Especially if the antsy creditors at the other table in court, as the article also states, want their money, than risk some lame pay happy extension to allow this slippery tanker survive another day.

Don't let the patents with no associated costs fool you after all the R&D is done and employees who created them get screwed. They just want to prolong milking this corpse with plenty of powerful legal might that gets paid first, enormous liberties, and theatrics where the most obvious will prevail go round.

I am dying to hear more about the criminal fraud trial proceedings and old boys pulling the puppet strings like Teflon dons in the not too distant future and just who the so many still there that were hard to find really are. =) They sure seem like they haven't left to me. Find the powerful puppet masters and I will find you room mates worthy of Ebbers' and Skilling's company, like how obvious does obvious get here? Anyone? Mr. Manley care to comment?

  • protosphere

“legality by the mal-administration of Ernst and Young”

The poster boys of conflict of interest E&Y who get paid first?
Contrary to what they told the government in forced inquiry using airbus gate Murooney's with bells on template about his kids education… they hired bankruptcy Binning well before announcing folding… after so many insider only CFOs… but try proving they lied… as obvious as it may seem

these clowns like Dunn and Nortel have templates like jurisdictional grounds that carry weight in between states, to saying anything that can not be proven or easily…even increased lawsuit insurance to a whopping $300M when they ironically traded options again than calling it something else to alleviate a failed board not getting paid… I laughed when I read ultimatum stands unless fraud ios associated with the pensions, hahaha… what a clause

    crooks I tell ya!

  • protosphere

    I do not think so.

First, the incentive funds should have been transferred to employees than management or those parachuting to other companies like green Hack. That alone strikes me as is crooked.

Second, I don't think creditors will stand around with their heads up their armpits waiting for Nortel to deplete what they can in this tug of was when there is already talk of liquidating patents, what they held out on last with intent. So what's left? Nothing… We have only begun 2010… I doubt they will make the end of the year before all is gone. Never mind 2012. And don't worry about our bright star's revenue stream, he's plenty respected in endless circles than depend on the service he generously provides others to assist through this hobby or interest. This isn't his full time job yanno nor does he depend on it. Be thankful we have it. How much did you pay to post today?

  • protosphere

The same way you have time to change an ID to defend rude stupidity. What is it with you guys still knocking such a proven blog, Heh, its like the pumpers on Yahoo claiming Nortel will rise from the ashes.. there seems to be a fine line between wishful intent and delusion with you guys while you attack the messengers. You don't like it, don't read it, simple as that,,, rude and low class “teleguy” is another ID… right? Can't be that many bitter and challenged…

  • wasthere

''Nortel is considering several options including auctioning the patents, a joint venture with a new partner, or long-term licensing agreements with various wireless companies.''

This says it all. After more then a year on the bankruptcy law they are still looking at options ? If I was at the creditors table I would have put a fast ending at this ploy to stretch the milking of the company. Why don't the creditors put these happy few under ultimatums ?

  • protosphere

They will. Worse yet, give them no choice /alternative contrary to what Nortel aspires by selling these last. Like how much have they lost waiting already.

The Toronto-based company said it is “exploring strategic alternatives to maximize the value””considering a range of options” ““Nothing has been decided yet”

First point to note is that “the company said”. They lie with no credibility. Any time I read “the company said” I disregard every word they say)

Nortel's options and alternatives restricted by the courts ruling not what they want.

“the company has come under increasing pressure from lenders, suppliers and stranded pensioners to salvage more money from the broken company.”
    (as per the courts)

Here they are kicking out even more millions to a few in management as Rome burns as further proof to how crooked this empire remains, after yet another ultimatum settlement, this time for pensions.

The courts should be gleeful to see these assets sold given the belly aching creditors. The judge must also deal with and what they owe with his hands tied to appease creditor they claim protection from, and not just Nortel under chapter 11 bankruptcy protection laws where they get to reward themselves for liquidating, again under ultimatum, than others under Chapter 7.

“Since Nortel filed for protection from its creditors last year, it has collected more than $3-billion in net proceeds by selling its various divisions to bigger foreign competitors. The company has $4.5-billion of long-term debt and owes billions of dollars more to suppliers and its underfunded pension plans.”

Hence, they will still be short plenty, enough to make them sell patents.

Regardless of luxuries they feel they have to ponder in options or alternatives.

They will come up short and must liquidate (under the enormous liberties of chapter 11 so far unlike any other company) All must be sold. There is no advantage to letting pay happy tanker keep operating any longer with depreciating assets and this lame pay happy stunt they try and pull.

Competition is also working on LTE for all they are worth. Nortel is stigmatized anyway. no matter what they do, again for all they are worth, right now anyways. Less later as only management sees money as usual.

  • Nortel watcher

I can just see it now…some folks at CVAS eyeing to jump ship over to NBS aka “S/S Sure Bet” for a 2-year cruise vs. staying in CVAS aka ” S/S In-Scope” for a possible lottery ticket to a lifeboat….do I hear the directors and JCI-6+ leading the way

  • bankrupt_bob

<<…imagine how pissed off you might be upon learning that Nortel plans to pay $97.3-million over the next two years to keep nearly 1,500 employees.>>

Averages out to $32,433.33 / employee / year. (No deduction made for the huge amounts granted to the “selected few.”) …Heck, they must have outsourced this, as well!

  • Zhacknightmare

Yeah, whatever. Are you living in the real world. Get a life!

    Odd person.

  • freqmgr

You probably do hear the JCI-6 directors and above leading the way….especially those with 20 – 30 years employment and “deep” penetration into their pay scale. Oh, of course, they contribute so much that they need to be retained! There are so many positions in industry for those leading a failed company (Z, Hack and some others excluded….they will be “picked up” some place). Unless of course they go to work for E&Y on the next bankruptcy project….who? Moto or ALU?

  • AcrimoniousAl

The NSIP “discretionary pool” will go for things like getting tickets to the New York Mets games. The Nortel leaders and their E&Y friends will no doubt have the best seats in town.

Probably they will find a way to keep using Empire Level Luxury Suite 214 even though Queens BallPark Company LLC filed a claim for $6,898,294.20. See Claim 6709, Exhibit F, page 27

Not really that odd. As Desk Jockey put it, a 2-3 year old. And what do they typically do? Whatever gets the attention of others, childish rants and raves that are 100% self-centered and impestuous.

Usually, the best strategy if you really want to deflate and extinguish these comments is to completely ignore them. Then there is no pay-off for him. Hard to do sometimes, but generally effective.
