Is Nortel Dead or Semi-Dead?

A month ago, I wondered whether a New Nortel could emerge from the ashes before it unveiled plans to sell the carrier business. Today, Network World’s Jim Duffy asks the same question based on the idea that Nortel could come back to life after paying off its creditors and debts.

One of the more interesting quotes comes from Tom Nolle, president of CIMI Corp., who suggests that:

“Nortel still has a viable brand. Given that, and the fact there’s been a lot of revolutionary changes in the industry, that could create new opportunities for service provider equipment vendors. My feeling is a smart private equity or even an internal group of Nortel people could rebuild something that would in effect behave like a start-up but would have the Nortel brand associated with it.”

My sense is that if Nortel was ever going to come back from the edge of extinction, it would have happened months ago. In fact, the time for Nortel to reinvent itself was before last June when the board hoisted the white flag by announcing plans to sell everything including the kitchen sink.

Nortel is a walking zombie since 2001 ....... highly paid zombies with creditors money in their pocket I should specify ! Real flesh eaters as George A. Romero would say !

I juts hope GB or whoever wins CVAS kicks all the Nortel brass out the door. The company is in the pits and we have execs forcing employees to come up with questions for their GISs, its become like a prison camp.
  • whopperscan
Ha, I can imagine... The reason no one asks them questions, is because they never answer them. All they choose to do, is spin the incredibly stupid and empty lines issued by the bureaucrats of corp HR and "communications" types. Remember Avakian & co, lol!! His spin about the approach of Ch 11 when it first came up (the Wall St Journal story) proved to be just more lies, which were faithfully and forcefully spouted by management in GIS's and the like.

Anti-climactic is Nortel's middle name, so when I read that Iraq's Chemical Ali was excecuted and another few bombs were lobbed, I couldn't help but think, yeah, "This Is The Way". Business as usual for the select few remaining.
  • less
I, too, have already heard of Old School tactics still being practiced in places.

Whats the saying - those who do not know or remember history are doomed to repeat it - which is why AAN needs to keep a detailed record of Nortel's final decade of corperate fraud, malfeasance and debauchery.
Also, those who witness any resurgence of the Good Old Way need to speak out against it.
  • whopperscan
I can't see anything even vaguely Nortel arising from this crash.
Anything that generated revenue or earnings are sold off *or about to be), for fire sale prices or embarrasingly worse (e.g: GSM).
The massive debts, including the unbelievable size of the "unfunded" pension deficits, that the BoD and successive CEO's hid so cunningly and, in hindsight, clearly knew of and ignored for a very long period, are simply too large.
I see words by Mark and a few others mentioning patents. Even "lucrative" !!
But I've yet to see a any evidence that Nortel patents are (a) unique enough and (b) actually earning much net bottom line profit... sorry but I don't think they exist.
Can anyone provide some facts, or even examples, on Nortel's unsold patents that might support some corporate phoenix. What specific patents do they have, that meet a & b criteria?

The heading asks "How Dead is Nortel" rather than how semi-dead...

It's already in an advanced state of decay with the vast majority of the corpse missing to an unrecognizable degree. Just how much more dead can dead get as we await the inevitable eulogy with not enough pounds of flesh to go around.

What analysts are mixed about whether the admitted "Nortel's disintegration" will survive in some form or die off, becoming a distant memory of a bygone era and century. Analysts have been so far off forecasting Nortel, how can we take their ponders seriously today.

Also admittedly stating, what's left (LG & patents) "address a market in decline. Can Nortel leverage any of these to re-establish a foothold in the industry?" answers its own question.

Others are also realistic to claim:

"The brand has been de-valued astronomically," says Frank Dzubeck, president of consultancy Communications Network Architects. "I think Nortel is part of the history of the 20th century. And it's not going to be part of the 21st."

Nortel cannot pay off shareholders or its pension obligations with the proceeds from its asset liquidation, Dzubeck notes. There's a possibility that what's left of Nortel could be managed in a portfolio to generate recurring income -- but any future reincarnation of the company would be up to the bankruptcy court and the Canadian government, Dzubeck says.

"Getting into the hardware infrastructure business is a fate worse than death today," Dzubeck says. "Any venture capitalist will tell you that. And the only way to do it is to have the federal government be a part of it. I don't think the Canadian government wants to be in the communications hardware business."

As a result, Dzubeck believes Nortel will fade from the scene entirely.

Too many shy from too many times bitten let alone once to consider "investors could buy Nortel intellectual property and naming rights and build a product portfolio around it with the familiar and -- at one time -- trusted brand. In essence, Nortel would be reborn, though as a much smaller, more finely targeted equipment vendor. " As for the government, they already gave the thumbs down, what makes Nolle think they will entertain them after all the stunts from fraud to cutting severances, and where will the carrot be for the bonuses.

"A bridge to the future without ties to the past" is unrealistic with their stigma after the largest fraud in Canada, and the only reason the pigs at the trough execs approa\ched the gov't. was for money to maintain exorbitant pay happy bonuses.

More relaistically, Nolle says. "If they license out the IP, they're going to get a pittance for it. And once they've done that, the brand is a shell. It diminishes the value of the brand enormously. But if they can't get financing it won't matter.

Also more realistically, "If they were going to do it, I doubt it would have the Nortel brand name," he says. "I think we've seen the last of that. Too much damage has been done. And all of the high-value [assets] have been sold off. Whatever's left, you wouldn't want to rally around that."

    ______________________________________________________

So in short and due to the overwhelming consensus in the commentary, Nortel is dead to a degree of overkill one might conclude... nothing semi-dead about it to objectively ponder ever so remotely in all seriousness, Nortel is gone... thankfully gone. Toast.

In 1999 Nortel was asking : WHAT DO YOU WANT THE INTERNET TO BE ?
Today we can finally answer that question : Nortel's grave !

"WHAT DO YOU WANT THE INTERNET TO BE"

    More competitive and affordable.

Anything than being supplied by bonus happy frauds losing huge money for a decade to exploiting their employees for their big business creditor pals, as we pay exorbitant monopolistic wireless costs to boot =)
  • KayToo
As far as liquidations go, the experts have been surprised by how well it has all gone so in some strange way the Nortel brand still has a lot of lustre. It is worth preserving.
With all the old technology baggage gone, they could focus on niche markets in next generation IT. It would be nice to see, rather than to see the moniker snuffed out completely.
  • protospherical1
heh... and yet another ID surfaces to rally around the decomposed corpse advocating how well it looks

who says it has a lot of luster in a "strange way" and is worth preserving.. what is left worth preserving pray tell.

Where would they get funds to do anything anyways even if they did have anything let alone another forever eluding plan, let alone under the stigmatized Nortel brand

... forget it, needs a thorough torching and exorcism, never to plague employees and shareholders again. Thankfully gone, leave it at that for all the damage it has done.

Even they don't want to reserect their skeletons in the closet I suspect. Enough theatrics have been staged to get them to this fine state as fraud trials loom on both sides of the border with Manley's law firm defending Dunn.
  • TongueInCheek
If Nortel emerges from bankruptcy, what would be the continued obligations related to the Pension Plans? Do they get set aside operating on current balances? Would the "new Nortel" be required to maintain the plans?

I think the legal requirements for the Pension Plans will have a lot of influence on what happens to Nortel in the end.
  • protospherical1
what "if"... will you ever finally forget it for once and just read the article

Paying off their creditors - pah!

As a prefered creditor, I received a settlement of $893 against an outstanding debt of over $31,000.

These incompetents are buried & should remain buried.
  • scalppeeler
You mean you would like to receive 900 bucks out of 31k.
They have not started paying out creditors yet. The company is still in BP.
What do you mean preferred creditor.
Preferring to wait it out and get nothing?
When did you get the cash.
Who else has been paid off.
  • Nortelguy
I am an ex UK employee. I chose to leave the business at the end of 4Q 08. Despite assuring me that they would pay SIP earned during that qtr, I became a prefered creditor. I received notification from the UK administrators (E&Y) that my creditor payment would be $893 instead of the amount earned during that qtr. The payment has not yet arrived, but when it does, I will see a net amount of sweet F.A once I have paid Tax / NI etc, etc.
  • random123
Some firms have done business with Nortel since CH11 was declared, but have not yet received full payment for that work.

I've heard of one firm of contractors who recently received 50% of their invoiced work, and are waiting, wondering, when they will get the rest.

All suppliers working witin Chapter 11 are paid on a separate basis from claims invoiced prior to Ch11, as I understand it.
  • random123
    Mark,

these writers are kidding themselves. Nortel wont emerge as a separate company because:

    1) Auction process already began. Stalking Horse announced.
    2) CVAS workers across Nortel have seen their MEN and Enterprise colleagues spirits rise high again as they go into new companies with new starts and promises. Believe me, CVAS employees are looking forwards ot being in the same position. New owners mean an end to (most of) the uncertainty. They will finally be able to start concentrating on their technology and business life again, rather than shuffling about trying to make do in a copmprimised environment.
  • exNTII
  • protosphere
Perhaps they can look at some of their older technologies and patents by making kettles, toasters, cigar lighters, electric stoves, and washing machines again, like Northern Electric was during the 1920s =)
  • exNTII
they would not survive. only used to running in a monopoly. as soon as all the cards are gone they cannot play.

they could create a nortel museum.
  • joremero
well, even circuit city sold the website (and brand?) so someone will see some value (I am sure it's gotta have some value) and will buy it and use it (abuse it?) for something
  • ntpurgatory
but circuitcity doesn't have such a tainted brand. They were a casulty of a crowded retail market in horrible economic conditions. While the same can be said about Nortel, the Nortel brand also has the taintedness of accounting fraud, bad management, and constant churn of strategy...in short, incompetence. And... sometimes even good brands don't re-emerge - like PanAm... (I think actually PanAm's brand been used on a NE US regional railroad believe it or not, but you get my point)...
  • Nortel watcher
I'm wondering how AVAYA and E/// are treating the incoming Nortelians with respect to salary. Can someone tell us if your Nortel salary was maintained or adjusted downward?

I'm sure your replies would help the CVAS folks get a sense for what may lie ahead depending on the pockets(deep or not) of the winning bidder.
  • bankrupt_bob
    "Nortelians"

What a fabulous name for the adversary alien species in the next Star Trek movie. They would, no doubt, make the Borg seem pacifist in comparison. Maybe the lawyers could glean a few extra bucks from allowing the use of the name? ;>)
  • Meridian
So far the Avaya journey has been great. Same job, salary, working conditions, and very similar benefits. Good indoctrination to Avaya processes. All my new "Avayan" co-workers have been very welcoming and open. Executive team so far seem to know what they are doing and can articulate their thoughts very well. Enterprise Voice Roadmap has been quick and fairly logical in my mind. I feel very postive about things so far.

.... still in Honeymoon mode though I guess.... ask again in 6 months
  • bankrupt_bob
It's truly good to hear some positive news.

There is NONE for those of us who "believed" in the company propaganda.
  • exNTII
hear its pretty good. at least from E///.
  • scalppeeler
    Can't imagine salary increases.
    Likely no change or decrease.
  • manchunli
If Nortel really come back to market, I think no employee will work with Nortel because this company never think about employee especially existing decision makers. And I do not understand why Avaya, or Ericsson can run the Nortel product, but Nortel can't run by themselves. It is RUBBISH
  • ntpurgatory
Mark, you have no clue - this is a pipe dream. All that remains at Nortel has teed itself up to have about 1-3 quarters of obligations left and that is it. All the left over scraps of the divisions that have been sold have been teed up that way. So once the obligations are up, then you sell off the chairs and desks and go the way of Eastern Airlines and Circuit City. You are no more. Signs are coming off of buildings (main campus in Beijing) real estate people are prepping buildings (Richardson, TX), and equipment is being de-installed (Richardson, TX EBC, projectors in conference rooms). It's over. Pick a new large vendor. Start an all about Cisco or All about Ericsson...
  • joremero
  • ntpurgatory
Yes, Nortel will reinvent itself to sell 30 year old chairs, unused "Business Made Simple" trinkets complete for $199.99 and if you act fast we'll throw in a free patent - all online...

Ok, admittedly, circuitcity was a bad choice. I should have said "...and go the way of Eastern Airlines and Drexel Burnham Lambert investment banking co" (another co with great leadership)
  • scalppeeler
My crystal ball shows me good things.
The more I polish it the brighter it becomes.
I see Nortel surviving for another Five to Fifty years under the guise of Business Services. Cash on hand continues to increase and any employees who remain on under the services group banner will continue to be bonusized. The I believe signage will make its return and there is talk that McGuinea and the lieberals are taking interest. Apparently the more buildings that are emptied of people and replaced with trees is a liberal plan in action. They cut down on carbon emissions/footprint and create more oxygen while cleaning the air. Ontario is driving out manufacturing in all facets and record numbers except for the jimmy hoffa unionists so less people with more trees gets dalton and suzuki all geared up for a night of toilet brick painting and non toxic glue sniffing.
I also see the pensioners continuing to get their full payment along with all disability payments remaining in effect.
The Creditors will continue to wait, rot and grow old.
Wait a Minute I just had a vision.
I see Mikey and Johnny and Franky and Colonel klink.
    Oh f*** that's romper room.
    That's my opinion anyway.
