The Word from Mike Z. and Hackney on Enterprise

Here’s the official comments from Nortel CEO Mike Zafirovski and Joel Hackney, who heads up the enterprise business, about the proposed sale of Nortel’s enterprise business to Avaya.

Mike Z.:

“We continue to be fully focused on running our operations and continuing to serve our customers while actively engaged in the sale of our businesses. We have determined that the sale of our businesses maximizes value while preserving innovation platforms, customer relationships and jobs to the greatest extent possible. The CDMA and LTE Access stalking horse asset sale agreement announced on June 19th, and today’s agreements around our Enterprise business are solid proof of that value. This represents the best path forward, and we are advancing in our discussions with interested parties for our other businesses.”

“The many customers I have spoken with have been highly supportive of our efforts and transparency throughout this process. They value our employees and technology platforms and are appreciative of our service levels which are at multi-year highs.”

“Today’s agreements underscore the value of Enterprise Solutions and the investments we have made in enterprise telephony, unified communications and data networking core competencies. If successfully completed, this transaction will provide clarity on the path forward for our Enterprise customers, partners and employees, and enable the industry to continue to benefit from Nortel-created technology, know-how and leading-edge innovation.”

“We have some of the best talent in the industry and will explore all potential opportunities for them as we move through this process.”

Joel Hackney, President, Enterprise Solutions: “The successful buyer will gain access to an industry-leading portfolio that is optimized for real-time communications, bringing speed and simplicity to customers’ network environments and allowing them to enhance collaboration, streamline business processes and improve productivity.”

“Enterprise Solutions has strong relationships with key customers and partners around the world, and we have helped them achieve industry-leading differentiation and competitive advantages. We remain committed to serving them without interruption through this process and, as we move forward, we pledge to communicate our progress to the greatest extent possible.”

looks like Zero man just wants to flee asap from the Nortel Swamp he made and trapped in, leaving whatever mess behind with a BS word: ” we have made a tremendous progress towards our goal…”

Hopefully Avaya will realize the first order of business is a beheading at the top level of the management tree …

  • Milan_Bekich

Now the truth can be told. Joel wasn't on vacation he was conferring with Avaya about his plans to cut costs at Enterprise and integrate it into the Avaya family.

Of course he also negotiated a fine eight figure employment contract filled with MBO's and retention bonuses.

    Way to go Joel !

    Milan

  • NortelEngineer

How many empolyees this time ??

  • NortelEngineer

How many employees this time ??

  • zeroman

so Joel was talking to Avaya on an all paid vacation. since he does not know much about the business, went over to just signoff and get a job offer, it was just like any other beach vacation.

anybody who wants the pleasure of axing executives is going to be sadly disappointed. thats not how it works friends. this is the real world of business.

  • watching…

From one concerned, is there anyone that could provide some concrete insight into the impacts of this announcement. What are the timings involved for further bids, acceptance of final bid, transition of business, notices to employees, etc.

No bashing, no hurtful comments, no told-you-so's….just some guidance. Please?

  • GoProto

Is there any concrete evidence that Hack has a position with Avaya?

  • another_optimist

The 363 process has the stalking horse bid to last anywhere from 45-60 days once the courts approve the agreement.

So using those numbers assuming a timely approval from the courts, nothing will be final until the mid-September/October timeframe

  • TongueInCheek

Personally, I want to read the court documents as they become available to get the facts on this potential transaction.

  • cooluswiz

So we all have 45 days to think and stay in further denial. After 45 days they will transition it, which will take 1-2 months in that process lot of people will loose jobs, customer reaction to this news will play a important rule in deciding the faith of certain units. The data part of the enterprise may suffer a major set back as the new masters may not be interested in data part of the company, so no new developement and some of us will support what we have and later will get a good bye ….Avaya as any other company is buying us for our customer base, once they have that the products does not mean anything…..as we could not wow thr customers with our products and Nortel customer will move on slowly to Cisco and Foundry. Avaya already a loosing company and with the help of our great leaders will become a real looser….All my friends in Nortel, the hardworking people please spend sometime learning other things if you want to survive this …..please come out of denial in which our managers have put us in till now…..realty is Nortel has gone and nobody want Nortel employees……..

  • nt_daisy

on the gis today it was said the auction period is to be 45 days. they expect approval from the courts within the next 2 weeks. Sept 15 is an “estimated” date for auction close, and if it is Avaya we are looking at December for transaction close. in regards to notice to employees it was very clear they will not be giving information in regards to % of employees to go or stay. the only detail we might get an answer to is if the years of service for employees that do go will transfer….they will get back to us on that one.

  • FormerBayGuy

The rumor is only about 20-25% (~1600).

  • tiredofitall

    What is your source?

  • less

The source is the horse, of course, of course. Sorry, couldn't resist.

  • Zhacknightmare

Word is the Choker was sent on Vacation as he wasn't up to the task of dealing with the Avaya execs.

I will be amazed if he makes it across to Avaya given the market and public perception of both him and his Bum Chum Z, time to abandon ship troops… get your plan B organised asap.

  • PM_Guy

Comments from Hackney's email about Employee impacts. Sound like a slaughter is going to happen but they are not ready to annouce it yet!

    All Employees

There is a great deal of information available on the internal microsite for employees to help you understand the “Stalking Horse” process and how it will impact you over the next few months. We expect that there will be meaningful roles for a number of employees in the new organization, but we don't know the scale or specific functions at this time. With respect to non-EMEA jurisdictions, soon after a buyer is confirmed through the bid process, we should have more information about their specific staffing needs. The buyer will need to determine how many employees they require, and in which locations and functions, to effectively run the business. The final determination is ultimately with the buyer.

In a number of EMEA jurisdictions the position is governed by local laws, and this will be more fully discussed as part of the information and consultation process applicable to that jurisdiction. We realize the interim period will cause anxiety, so communication is imperative.

  • PM_Guy

He was asked on the GIS if he would be transistioning to Avaya with this deal. He side stepped the answer the same way he side stepped any other meaningful question asked on the GIS. “Just keep a laser focus and our customers and keep them happy” Don't worry about your own jobs until I say so.

  • zeroman

I think he does. maybe not the heady President role he has now.

  • FormerBayGuy

Nothing official. But there is a lot of overlap (esp. in NA region and UC products). And the general consensus is they are really just after the customer base and sales channels. Which certainly makes more business sense than eating the whole pie.

  • Asset_Number_XXX

If I hear one more time about the “path forward”, I'll scream! These emails are like the Nortel software. Recycled ten times over.

  • Another_Nortel_Watcher

Trust me, there is no role for the assaulter of women at Avaya. Avaya is a clone of a Valley/Cisco shop now and they don't tolerate empty suits/empty heads.

  • trueroyal1871

If I was Avaya the first thing I would do is give the choker and the z man the chop these scum bags need to get the boot because we all know they will never fall on their swords. Unless it was a pork sword or a mutton dagger which I'm sure Mike and Joel know all about ;-)
