Who Wants a MEN?

With Nortel’s CDMA and LTE businesses in the process of being sold to Nokia Siemens, the next assets on the block are the enterprise and Metro Ethernet Network businesses.

LightReading’s Craig Matsumoto offers up a list of potential buyers for MEN.

    I'll stop in a sec, I promise…

-Off the Wall… as in 'Ah, well, we might as take the Nortel BTS down now…”

-MJ was Captain EO, MZ saw Captain I/O whilst looking at The Man in the Mirror. That, at least, is HIStory as he Wanna be Starting Something even afterl Nortel books were hit by some Smooth Criminal.

I just got an e-mail from Penny Sleuth, titled:

Catch a Ride on the Fiber Technology Wave

But while Congress and the watchdog groups focus on solving those giant conundrums [oil, scarcity of credit], a sleeping problem is creeping up from behind — bandwidth scarcity.

While you may be paying dearly for that blazingly fast Internet connection, industry insiders are flustered about the projected cost raises that will be necessary to meet the sky-high demand for data. Already, the information networks that carry your television programs, phone calls and e-mails are nearing capacity…and without investment today, AT&T expects the Web to reach full capacity by 2010.

The future is in fiber optics. And we’ve found an undervalued penny stock that’s ready to take advantage of this powerful trend…

Fiber Optics: Your Hidden Profit Generator

Fiber optics are superior in nearly every way to the metal wires that likely feed data to your home. Fiber-optic cables carry more data than traditional cables, and they do so farther, at a lower cost and with less interference.

    Last one, I promise

    http://www.cnn.com/2009/TECH/06/26/michael.jack…

Jackson dies, almost takes Internet with him

The biggest showbiz story of the year saw the troubled star take a good slice of the Internet with him, as the ripples caused by the news of his death swept around the globe.

“Between approximately 2:40 p.m. 3:15 p.m.today, some Google News users experienced difficulty accessing search results for queries related to Michael Jackson,” a Google spokesman told CNET. At its peak, Google Trends rated the Jackson story as “volcanic.”

Whats to happen to it when Mike Z leaves Nortel AND takes his Internets with him????

    yes ;>)

yup….heard this too from senior MEN execs who are really excited about buying it up and resurecting optical as a standalone compan…those rumours started as soon as MEN was put up on the block….the execs in MEN know that they have an 18 month lead in 40G/100G tech and that they will succeed…even a bankrupt company managed 50+ wins and 40%+ market share…think that's proof of product for you.

  • zeroman

when he kicks the can maybe. all those shareholders, employes, retirees.

  • zeroman

ok why dont you post which products in data are of value and the market share. I dont like Cisco but they and other players took this over a long time ago.

you dorks claim data leadership with less than 5% share.

if there is value then lets wait and see. how much do you think it is valued at. maybe a heady 1 billion on vaporware numbers.

legacy base is quickly eroding. ALU has enough problems as it is. Ben's having a tough time restructuring.

read into NSN's statement. the 650 million acquisition itself is complex enough that they likely will not look at any more units. ALU cannot take over such a big liability now.

  • Norterrible

Are you insane? MEN has never shown a profit in 10 years run by the same execs that want to now buy out the business unit but suddenly they will run MEN as a successful standalone company? You must be insane or must be a senior MEN exec.

As for proof of product, 40% market share is simple to achieve when you sell your product at a significant loss. It also looks good while in bankruptcy to show potential aquirers that you are not dead, yet.

Q2 numbers will show how sick MEN really is these days.

The incompetent senior MEN execs cannot run a standalone company.

  • zeroman

MEN has over 4000 people. doing what??????

peer protection is a given. optical has always been like that keeping a very tight circle hard to enter.

  • painful_truth

Nortel is the best ran telecom vendor company in Canada. The leadership is top notch with outstanding business acumen.

  • painful_truth

The director ranks and above at Nortel are leaders! They anticipate the future, are inspirational to the rank and file, and are run a very efficient operation. The propoganda is distributed via powerpoint slides via a very fast internal Internet. No where on earth is there such a powerful management flunky machine.

  • Norterrible

    I absolutely agree with you.

They are the best at lying, best at committing financial fraud, best at keeping an old R&D team full of useless managers, architects, and directors, best at business incompetence best at ensuring there is no absolutely responsibility or accountability anywhere at any time, and the absolute best at promoting friends with absolutely no skills, relevant experience, or proven track records of success.

This business unit is a dog and must be put to sleep.

like i said – its just a rumour on the street. MEN is not far from break even and a standalone organization without Nortel corporate overhead and inefficiencies can surely be close to break even….40% market share is not 'simple' to get….think of the s-curve….products start in incubation–>growth–>maturity–>legacy….margins continuously rise until the legacy stage…basic business theory…sure margins are low with 40G/100G because its just starting its growth phase….they sold 1000+ OME 6500's last year and this number is growing expoenentiall right now… like with any new product in the 'growth' phase margins will sure increase wit product cost efficiencies, economies of scale, and operational efficiencies….if this part of nortel went out standalone and IPO'd….believe it or not I would be an investor…..they are far ahead of the competition and everyone knows that the carriers' bandwidth is drying up….just wait until 4G deployment. By the way – i'm not an exec…i'm a fomer employee…and I would highly doubt that we'll ever see q2 numbers based on TSX delisting and the company breaking up over the next months.
