Q4 and Full-Year Results Out March 2

Just in case you were wondering about when Nortel would posts its fourth-quarter and full-year results, they’re coming out March 2.

Unfortunately, Nortel has decided not to host a teleconference/audio webcast. A cost-cutting measure or perhaps another initiative to avoid contact with the public what with the cancellation of the AGM and all.

Update: According to Nortel, the decision to not do a Webcast or teleconference is based on the fact that due to the bankruptcy filing there’s little coverage from financial analysts.

Having been referred to as a hyena and retarded for still being a shareholder, I would like to state that probably the majority of people still holding NT stock had it before the CH 11 filing. I have not bought any shares since the filing. My average cost/share is just over $5 on 5K shares. I bought because it was cheap and oversold...hoping for a gain. NT leadership completely misled shareholders and should be held to account.

    My diatribe...
The capitalist system is in dire straits. Who will ever have confidence in the stock market (always said to have largest gains in the long run) if 12 years of gains are wiped out in less than 6 months. Investors who have some influence and control had better start stepping up to the plate or the whole system is DONE!!!!! Stock investing will be a thing of the past....

Wave the red flag in front of the Bull and lets get things going again!!!!

But Nortel is a globo-Canadian company, increasingly comprised of young (ophaned?) minorities. Their presence alone should easily counter the evils of capitalism. And for free.

    Slightly OT but worth pondering:

Germany has decided to boost its mandatory retirement age from 65 to 67. At the same time, many firms are shedding older workers with help from subsidized retirement plans. Is Germany suffering from pension confusion?

"In Germany, it has always been socially accepted to treat older employees differently," Zimmermann said. "Only a few people perceive it as real discrimination. On the contrary, if older employees were given the opportunity to leave early, it was more welcomed than criticized."

Firms often preferred to push aside expensive older employees in favor of cheaper, younger ones, and the government facilitated this by subsidizing early retirement schemes.

Replacing one bad idea with another bad idea isn't a good solution," said the IWK's Schäfer. "Germany doesn't need it; it provides the wrong sort of incentive. If older people lose their job, they should have to go out and find a new one."

He insists that, despite common wisdom that people over 40 face a much more difficult employment outlook, the jobs are there to be had "if they are prepared to compromise" on such issues as training, salary and location.

The number of workers aged between 50 and 64 across the EU will increase by 25 percent over the next two decades while those aged 20 to 29 will decrease by 20 percent, leaving German economists wringing their hands over the impending skilled-labor shortage and fretting over the country's pay-as-you-go pension system, which is already teetering on the brink of insolvency.

"This (pension) system will break down if there are not enough people working," Schäfer said. "The dilemma can be solved by lowering the amount of pensions people get, increasing the amount people have to pay in, or raising the retirement age. And in fact we are going to have to do all three of those at the same time."

Throw money at govt security not stocks. Learn a new trade (free) that specializes in 40+year olds (=old farts). Then be prepared to stay unemployed or earn increasingly less with age as a sewer worker in good old eastern Germany, till the govt files Ch 11?

In Mike Z GIS he said that there were 1800 notifications yet to be completed from last year announcements. This struck me strange because I am sure a lot of notifications before year end. If you can check OSM you’ll see a huge number of entries with no phone numbers. Before searching pick the phone number as one of the fields and the headcount type. Pick any field and use “begins with” and choose different letters or numbers, or just use Title contains and just put a space and you’ll see everyone. Scroll through about a hundred pages or so and note how many missing phone numbers. I see about 10% have no number, so I think that the 1800 have all already be notified – maybe more. Looking at names I know they are all from pre-filing days in Dec., but none from Sept, Oct, early Nov. The names of those given notice back then that I know have been removed. To me the work remaining to close on the 1800 might only be to have them removed from the OSM as headcount and maybe finish giving them their RoE. This needs explaining.

That can be realy mis-leading. There are hundreds of people that work in operations, network centers that do not have DID dedicated lines.

Daimler Managers' Pay Cut In Half For 2008
wouldnt that also be a measure for the Nortel Board to let the Nortel "World Class Management Team"share the pain and cut their salaries of the according to their ongoing low performance since 3 Years

OK let`s be serious.... who will purchase Nortel ?
Please think about Worldcom-MCI vs Verizon ....
In 6 months (90 days to clear the books and staff + 90 days for negotiation) from now Nortel will not exist anymore....
One more question: Did Flextronics contributed to destroyed Nortel ?
  • Latest downfall video, in case you haven't seen it.

The claim from Nortel that they are not going to have a webcast because of the analysts contains a couple of hidden arguments.

The first hidden argument(bogus) is that press conferences are held purely for analysts. What bunk. Other people care too. Employees, maybe?

The second hidden argument in the official excuse is that analysts are no longer covering Nortel so therefore they would just ignore any information we broadcast. More bunk. Nortel is a publicly traded company. They will report on Nortel with or without any press conference. The analysts are not going to cover Nortel more or less based on whether a webcast occurs. That is ridiculous beyond words.

These guys are scared to face the music. Plain and simple.
  • McBeese
I don't think it is only that they're scared to face the public, I think Mike Z may finally be realizing that he is unprepared to face the public. He has no plan and I'm thinking that the CH11 monitors may have finally said "Hey, the emperor has no clothes!" One can only hope.
  • sick_sigma
They can easily sidestep questions about future plans. They can simply say that court will not allow them to give out specifics.
  • Guest
Apparenlty Q1 results are going to be really poor despite all the propaganda that customers are still buying
  • protosphere
Did they expect analysts to cover a bankrupt company?
Sounds like they finally heard enough.

Ask them no questions and they will nor tell lies.

Silence is a tool they traditionally use that never led to better news anyways
Seems the most obvious is what we see than what they say.

Q4 will show -20% tanking revenue before folding let alone after... who would want to know more, or care... numbers will do the talking this time, never mind NoTell
  • McBeese
I predict that the reason for Ch11 will finally become apparent. I think we'll discover that a lot of cash disappeared in Q4 and the amount of cash reserves is a lot less than everyone has been assuming.
  • scalpcutter
I think you are out of your mind however.

Why would a company who's most sales are right here in North America stash so much money off shore disproportionately?

Are there any performance penalty surprises with their JVs to claim this security was to be used there locally?

If they had folded earlier, before the downplayed 2005's revisions that doubled, there would have been a huge surprise back then too, let alone now in the boat they are in.

Who trusts them? ... every day is a surprise =)

To get outright conspiracist, consider that just as the SEC finally closes in to monitor accounting repair after so long, they succumb to downplay folding to fold, and before the fraud trials begin with so many still there... Nah what was I thinking, must be coincidence

Now where's the money going? Paying losing bet options, premiums for $100M legal insurance, more incentives for key employees? huh?

or I can just see it now, show me the money, well the numbers are unreliable so you will have to wait ...again. Ya right...

Can anyone fathom more revisions given they were worse every time counted by the very week last time until brought to an abrupt halt, with no further inquiry claiming the work was already done while these revisions were for following years... SEC finally monitorsd repair and they... well... fold.

I do not believe having 20 % more or less makes a difference at this stage anyways. They are a train wreck that can't even get salvaged.

What cash, they are bankrupt anyways.

"Doing so rewards us with 30% less interest. Thats 30% savings!"

    Perhaps.

I think 3-5 year Pla is a joke now!
I still don't understand why the guy who destroyed Nortel corporation, Mike Z, is trying to fix it?

You are right but Nortel is right too.
Why would they give satisfaction to shareholders now?
It would change nothing. Lost time and energy.
    btw
    what shareholders?
Who is left holding the bag? The current bag_holders are hyenas of the stock markets and retarded investors who think they will make money holding bankrupt company's shares.
Why would Nortel risk its reputation to talk to shareholders mentioned above?
Nortel has many smart employees who exercise game theories in everyday business and politics. Google Game Theories
    in conclusion
Why would Nortel want to play the game if there is nothing to win?
    The Game is over!

Why not contact Investor Relations and get an accurate answer rather than posting speculation?
  • Casual_Observer
Investor Relations and Nortel has violated the public trust enough. They do not have any credibility left to use. They don't deserve to be contacted. The ugly truth is plainly in sight now and there is nowhere they can run or hide to.

After 5 years of pumping NT no matte what you continue doing so.
    Why not contact Nortel?
For the simple reason proven time and time again...
Our speculations are proven to be 99% correct
    on the other hand
All the official Nortel statements, PRs, reports, are proven to be misleading, clear lies and frauds.
    The list is endless...
    btw
    What IR?
    The stock is BK
There are no shareholders but hyenas and retarder holders
IR was first to go under the ax as not needed anymore.
    What IR?

    speculation:

    1) supposition, view, theory, hypothesis.

Too bad Albert Einstein wasn't able to run his Theory of Relativity by Al Gore. Al is the Goracle when it comes to energy.

    2) engagement in business transactions involving considerable risk but offering the chance of large gains, esp. trading in commodities, stocks, etc., in the hope of profit from changes in the market price.

Yep. Nortel Investor Relations would know the "accurate answers'. Just lookit NT stock.
  • TIC,

    Good point. I'll ask.

    cheers, Mar
  • Thanks for following up on TIC's request Mark. Looks like their answer is one of desperation: "No one cares anymore, so why should we?"
  • The psychiatrist
That's BS with their track record over the last 3 years, someone should go over there and throw them out by their ears...since when dooes a publicly held company 's shareholders allow incompetent management to continue running a company that they have so massively failed at doing?

That's the real reason why they have put off the AGM is because they're afraid that somone will toss them out buy the curb.

In the modern business world anyone who is thought of as being a poor performer, incapable, incompetent etc they get shown the door-these idiots are no different!

Standard reply will likely be "In order to remain focused so that we may return to sound financial footing and better hold our customer's best interests as priority... Thank you for all you have done for Nortel"
