Nortel Needs Cost-Cutting Help?

For the past three years, Nortel has been in cost-cutting mode as Mike Z. and his senior management team focused on making the company leaner, meaner and viable.

Well, that didn’t work as well as planned so Nortel filed for bankruptcy protection so it could have more flexibility to reduce its workforce and, as important, lessen its debt obligations.

But now Nortel says it needs more help to slash cuts so it wants to hire a consulting firm, Mercer, to help it with compensation issues. Of course, Mercer doesn’t come cheap. According to Reuters, junior associates will cost $250 to $300 an hour, senior associates cost $350 to $450 an hour, a principal working on the file costs $667 an hour, while a specialist principal costs $725 to $870/hour.

What I want to do is….how do I get on the Nortel gravy train?!

You've got to be kidding me ! Mercer is same company that ended Nortel's pension plan. I'm left to wonder why a company with greater liabilities than cash should be allowed to continue to operate. Where is the outrage for laid off workers with no severance and pensioners with no pension from Nortel ?

  • Purpletip

I am outraged! To pay Mercer more money to do another poor job is unthinkable! I can only hope the Bankruptcy Judge will say No! to this request. And for what, if Nortel's HR folks cannot figure out compensation they need to all be fired today – end of story.

  • http://nortelinsider.wordpress.com/ Desk Jockey

More corruption from the people who eat the stuff for breakfast, lunch and dinner:

“The company says in the filing that Mercer has “substantial knowledge of (Nortel's) current operational condition,” which could help it design an incentive plan for key employees.”

So they hire these “experts” for $$$ so they can help them design an incentive plan to benefit “key employees”?

This is just another way to absolve their corruption. Now when they make big bonuses even in the face of Nortel's downfall, they can point to the consultants and say “it was them, not us!”

Just like how they said the execution of severances was due to advice from their “advisors”

  • AnotherSlave

At this point, I really do think they need help to “slash cuts”. Not one thing this management team has done had produced anything. From this management of the company, they will never get or retain good engineers in the future, the cutting and mismanagement has just gotten too old.

  • Cataractus

This is typical of Mike Z's style – penny wise and dollar foolish. Even in bankruptcy the Zeroman continues to spend staggering amounts of money on citems that produce absolutely nothing of value – e.g. lawyers and insurance for the BOD – while gasping for pennies by selling off the Alteon product line to Radware. And I sure hope I'm not the only one to see the sweet irony of paying consultants about 10x the wage of an average Nortel engineer to come up with a plan to “reduce costs”. Zeroman and Hacker live in an alternate reality.

BTW Mark, I agree with your last sentence. IMHO you're probably more competent and aware of Nortel's problems than most Mercer consultants. Its high time Mike Z pays you $400 an hour to come up with a plan.

  • Cataractus

Good catch. Looks like Zeroman want to hide behind Mercer to another outrageous bonus as “key employee” even in the face of manifest imcompetence.

  • NortelTragedy

So who's wife, son, daughter or immediate family member is working at Mercer (or will be soon)? One of Mike Z's sons is at McKinsey, right? Maybe Richard Lowe's kids, or Hackney's wife? I'm sure there's a sweetheart deal somewhere in the background!! Criminal. Absolutely criminal.

How about an open letter to the bankruptcy judge? Or President Obama? Or the attorney general? Nortel is the perfect example of executive corruption and greed at the sake of employees, retirees, and stakeholders. At various levels, surely criminal charges are applicable if one were to dig a little bit.

Here's an analysis of the latest moves by Nortel management to profit off the bankruptcy proceedings.

  • netas

managers are hiring outside managers for cost cutting. so what for the top level executives of nortel are paid? i am so sad for the shareholders of nortel. they are being ripped off.

  • felixmk

I read the docket documents on Mercer. This is clearly an attempt to legitimize bonuses to senior execs under the KEIP program. A friend of mine ran into a senior Nortel exec recently who was quite hopeful that he would get a KEIP bonus. Mercer brings a veneer of legitimacy to a ridiculous idea. Does anyone think that any of Nortel's senior execs will jump ship? Where would they get a job given the economy and their track record? Why pay them KEIP bonuses?

  • brett5

Hard to believe given the pending news due this week that 3000+ more being let go in 2009.

At this company up is down, left is right, no sense makes sense. I'd have to guess that chapter 7 is the real intention since everyone is willing to justify that chapter 11 is good.

  • http://nortelinsider.wordpress.com/ Desk Jockey

Who knows about their families. I for one do not care. There's no need to speculate on potential corruption when there are so many examples of blatant corruption out there, e.g the promotion of Hackney after his clearly demonstrated inability to lead and this current attempt to legitimize KEIP for executives even as Nortel is driven into the ground by the very people who benefit from its destruction.

  • broadbandbill

How does hiring expensive consultants save with cost-cutting measures? This action is an insult to even sub-human intelligence (Sorry Joel).

I am now convinced Nortel’s downfall was a premeditated move initiated when Nortel’s management realized that it couldn’t turn this ship around, which I approximate to be about a year ago. This way they buy yet another two years in a market where they could not find anyone would be hiring this bunch of low-life GEngsters. Mercer, McKinsey, et al have done business w/Z before, of that I am certain. This is yet another example of that ‘ol boys club’ where they don’t ask how you got rich, so long you are rich. And yes, they are all rich at the expense of thousands and tens-of-thousands of families left in ruin. God help them and their empty souls!!!!! ..–bb

  • broadbandbill

    Good one DJ, tnx–bb

  • netas

can anyone tell please? who are the main shareholders of nortel? who selects the BoD?

    thanks

  • HeadsZWinsTailsYouLose

It's been asked before but I'll ask again.

At what point does this become criminal behavior and why isn't anyone doing anything about it?!?!?!?!?!?!

Z is writing his own rules as he goes and he's getting away with it. What the heck is going on with this company?

  • drudge

That's just the tip of the iceberg – check out dockets 291 & 294 off the US eqip website. See what those investment advisors are charging. Not to mention the dockets out there detailing the lawyers fees which are comparable to Mercer's fees.

  • HeadsZWinsTailsYouLose

Why don't all the current (and ex) NT employees organize and show up at the next court hearing to voice their concerns.

I'll provide the shoes free of charge!

  • NortelTragedy

The point is that backroom sweetheart deals are in play. Although it is interesting that Z pushed likely tens of millions of dollars to McKinsey for Business Transformation consulting.

Z likely has inside connections at Mercer and using them as a front to promote and justify executive retention and bonus KEIP plans.

Also, I'd love to see a Judas Iscariot video with Z selling us out for thirty pieces of silver.

  • RealityStrikes

    “Reality Strikes”….

What an amazing story! Is someone from Hollywood (sorry, outsourced to Bollywood) writing the script for the executives and the BoD? Can it get any crazier?

I’ll answer my own question: I think it can get crazier. Don’t be surprised if one of the $800/hour Mercer “anal–ysts” suddenly determines that z-man needs his $1M/month corporate jet back and that Nortel can afford it (since they know so much about Nortel’s financial condition).

z-man and his executive minions must be finding this quite entertaining. This employee (for how much longer?) is deeply distressed.

  • scalpcutter

And this surprises you when you see how Nortel moves alot of managers around when they are laid off to meaningless positions that require no management. Lay them off in the morning and hire them somewhere else in the next day. That is the problem with Nortel and always has been. Too much management. Just let the people do their jobs.
They surely haven't survived their this long due to incompetency. I am talking the rank and file here.

  • 4merEmployee22

Isn't there a way for the RCMP to step in and really investigate their books?
But, this time there is no fraud being commited, retirees were being
DEPRIVED of their dues.by Nortel hiding behind the CCAA and Chapter 11.
They step in when Frank Dunn was at the helm. If they start paying all these
blood sucking leeches……there goes the severances and pensions!!!! They filed
for bankruptcy protection and yet will pay these clowns for obscene service
charges for what? For what??? eh? It's nice to be a 'chosen'!
Instead of compensating retirees for toiling so many years for the company, an employee is just but a number and dispensable. What kind of other words in the English Language should one choose to describe these outrageous acts???? The President of the most powerful country on earth has some Advisers, What about the CEO of Nortel? We never hear much from their Board of Directors? Aren't they the supposedly Advisers??? Who were the members of the BOD and how much are they really paid? Or are they paid???

Is there a similarity of this Nortel with the AVRO ARROW ? I wonder?
I know, the AVRO ARROW didn't go bankrupt! The thing is, no Canadians
fought for its right to exist for future generations! AVRO ARROW was dismantled
and so will Nortel !!!. Somehow there is someone orchestrating the dismantling
of Nortel !!! Pity? Come May 1, 2009 ..then what??? Then some clowns will
say.. WHO KNOWS?? What a way to forecast the future of the business.
WHO KNOWS? Yup! Someone knows! Somebody knows! As long as they
don't jump out of a sinking ship!!!

    My 10 cents comment…….

  • forgive

Ford CEO took 30% pay cut today.

  • http://nortelinsider.wordpress.com/ Desk Jockey

I don't doubt your claims. Z has consistently shown himself to be a two face, telling high stories of goodwill and intentions to employees while simultaneously doing the opposite.

The GE way is all about perks and the buddy system. Eg scratch my back and I'll scratch yours. But they are devious enough to keep it all off the records so they can't be prosecuted.

  • Cataractus

My thoughts exactly. They idea that some other company is waiting in the wings to pay big $$$ for the “talents” of Zeroman and Hacker is laughable. Nobody wants these losers. Zeroman simply wants to use Mercer as a smokescreen to get another pound of flesh for himself out of Nortel's dying carcass.

  • IbelieveYOURcrazy

I want this guy to replace Z, this is a TRUE CEO!

What happned to Lean Six Sigma (LSS) projects that were supposed to cut the operating expensis and other cost? These guys wasted millions on LSS traning.

  • RealityStrikes

There was probably a LSS project with a final analysis that Nortel needed to spend $M's on Mercer so that Mercer could figure out how to Keep Executive Idiots Paid. I'm sure the BoD, z-man, or one of his executive pets sponsored that project.

The closing scene on the Bollywood movie (to be released next week) will show the Mercer report being completed, and then swiftly flown (on a corporate jet) to the BK judge for his signature. But after signing the report, it is revealed that the printer at Mercer HQ ran out of ink, and only $1,00 is to be paid to z-man and his pets. Then z-man and his pets go insane upon hearing the news and Lean 6-Sigma each other; insert random sex scene; The End.

Will people hit the streets in protest and for survival like in Mexico and other rich-excess and poor-deprived countries? Riots, kidnappings and ransoms, fights for basic survival and human necessities … will we see it?

  • linho

Just got notified today that my last day is Thursday and Friday may not be paid. Here the smart-a$$ execs hire consultants to find away to save money i.e. not even pay for the Friday, wait until close to the end of month to skim money on the promised medical health benefits covered till the end of month… so ridiculous tha there possible chance losing more money in the sale of Alteon, if Radware is outbid then NT is to pay Radware legal fee and break-up fee…sigh I guess the Z-mantra “spend money to save money”…

  • used2bethere

Mike Z didn't like the advice he got so he made his own decisions….

  • broadbandbill

    I second that!..–bb

  • Got_Out

There is precedent here. When the “transformation” started, they hired McKinsey to work strategy and Bain to attack cost cutting. These were the guys that came up with stellar moves like no styrofoam coffee cups, plastic creamer for coffee and no plants in the office. Of course, apart from the retainer, they got a percentage of the “savings' (paper of course). Kept Bill Donovan employed even after he was removed as HR VP.

Mike likes consultants. Be interesting to see how much has been spent on them in Mike's tenure and what the real benefit was for the shareholders (I wont use the word “impact” as they had a lot of that)

  • used2bethere

My advice, make Mike Z an unsecured creditor…..

  • so_screwed

Very interesting. I was talking with some grunts today and they have been doing some significant detective work in Richardson. Our HR never seems to learn. They reserve rooms in their names for separating people from employement with NorHell. This time is no exception. March 4th they have an auditorium reserved for the bloodletting. I've been hearing the March 2nd date for some time, which at least gives folks access to benefits for almost a month, which is amazing they'd be that humane. Word is that it's as much as 25% cuts across the board. We'll see.

At this point, it seems more apt to look at this as NorHell freeing up hostages during the first week of March.

  • used2bethere

Z didn't like what they said either and did what he wanted AGAIN….

  • broadbandbill

I quote what Happily Retired Cisco Executive (my guess: Gary Kunis) said about Z a few months ago: ‘The only way for Z to give up his compensation is if he leaves Nortel feet first’.

  • broadbandbill

He was featured in President Obama's speech earlier tonight; real leaders and real CEOs, not ones that 'read about leadership'…–bb

Yes, there will be a movie called “Corporate Z-ombies”; a modern-day horror story about the un-dead that pretend to assist ailing companies with promises of turnarounds but end up taking over the entire company, suck up every penny while leaving the employees without any future hope. Loosely based on Bram Stoker’s Dracula…–bb

  • nortel_ottawa

In the internal nortel org chart, there're still ~100 ppl with a title including the words 'black belt'.

    Nuff said

  • broadbandbill

Don’t be surprised if someday Z ends up running McKinsey ‘Global Business Transformation Practice’ and hires all of his cronies there. The man is beyond deviously insane; he is actually pretty frightening (in a very evil, selfish way)…–bb

  • Casual_Observer

I think the best way to now hit Nortel is to petition the EDC to use the line of credit on another company. Nortel and its management is not worthy of the credit risk. What exactly is the Canadian government thinking ?!

    http://www.edc.ca/english/index.htm

  • yaker

That's too bad. What dept were you in?

  • watching…

    Correction.

    Spend money to spend money…

  • ERworker

    Zeroman doesn't have a plan…
If he can't, then Mercer can
    Then just like Pontius Pilate,
He can wash his hands and hide
And hope no one finds where he stashed
    His ill-gotten gains
    Especially…..his soon to come
    KEIP millions
    while Nortel slowly dies

  • end_game

Similarly, you would think that the Z team would have a set of objectives. If any of them don't deliver their piece, they should be classified as a “low performer” and let go. Isn't that what happens to the rest of us ? But then again, Z doesn't and never has had a structured plan, so no-one can be held accountable.

  • LonelyOpsGuy

That is exactly the reason why. So they can take their share and blame Mercer on it.

  • LonelyOpsGuy

    Exactly!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

To Compare Canada with Mehico is like comparing a worn out shoe with holes
on through it to an off the Shelf Greb Kodiak.
Mehico is a fifth world country.
Canada is an industrial/resource rich world powerhouse. A G8 country.
In mexico in order to maintain a decent living you either have to sneak across the border as an illegal or join a drug cartel.
