$300M Deal is Old News

There’s a bunch of news reports about Nortel and a $300-million, 10-yeal with the U.S. Social Security Administration for a VoIP system.

Just so you know, it was announced in July 2007.

More: TMCNet’s blog has a rather indignant post on how the U.S. government “$300 million on Nortel VoIP”.

This is simply the guys at PEC (the company Bill Owens bought when he was a temporary CEO) trying to remind the world that they exist hoping that someone will offer NT some cash to acquire them.
PEC guys have been making some money and looking to get spun off from Nortel for a long time now. Perhaps this is a perfect time for them to start pushing stories like this in the media.
Notice the “About Nortel Government Solutions” at the bottom of the CNN article? This is just too obvious.

Can't wait till all of you are laid off. Don't count on getting a job as a powerpoint project manager cause those days are over for you! Get a real job, eh?

  • xixi

PPT manager, exact words, LOL. When will those PPT guys get laid off?

  • NortelTragedy

There are other jobs out there, trust me. Several Nortel competitors are cherry picking employees as they ramp up for LTE, further kicking dirt on the Nortel grave site.

Hey Mark, I thought you were monitoring these comments. There is nothing redeeming by letting waste cases like NTHATER taking up space on this forum.

This Nortel CS1K win was announced back in 2007. I think the recent press release is still fair as it identifies hitting a signficant milestone of the deployment.

This win is noteworthy for both PEC and Enterprise Voice (CS1K) by the shear size, feature set, and redundancy of the solution.

No one else except Avaya could have done this. Cisco could not come close.

The comments from Tom Keating on TMCNet about Asterisk are laughable. For someone who portays himself as VoIP savy, he sure does not understand the scope of this network.

Wow… friendly fellow — who peed in your cornflakes this morning ?

  • Ex_CS1000

What role did the “PEC” people play in this deal ?

The Social Security network upgrade was being talked about BEFORE the purchase of PEC.

  • Cataractus

You're right that Cisco still can't come close to being as robust and feature rich as Nortels CS1K and neither, of course, can freeware Asterisk or up and coming Microsoft OCS. But just a few years means a lot in this business and Nortel has seriously dawdled under the Mike Z regime. In particular, Nortel's competitors have taken big leaps on the whole Unified Communications/Multimedia thing. If UC starts taking off, Nortel will be in a heap of trouble in spite of its rich and robust set of traditional PBX features. Other vendors are furiously ramping up their set of traditional PBX features as well.

Oh yeah, plenty of jobs just you wait…..Come on out in the real world and quit hiding. Do you BELIEVE? I believe you and the rest of the scum at NT are going to be very hungry unless you steal the fries you will be making…..
