The Vultures are Circling

As Nortel works on its restructuring, its competitors are circling above looking to pick up customers worried about Nortel’s future.

Case in point is Aruba, which has offered special prices to Nortel customers to migrate to its wireless management suite. Some of the other vultures include Enterasys and F5 Networks, while Juniper is aggressively going after Nortel’s resellers.

F5 said last week that Nortel’s Alteon customers can get trade-in credits and customized consulting services if they migrate

F5′s program is aimed at customers and resellers of Nortel’s Alteon application switches. The company is offering trade-in credits up to $9,000 toward replacements, as well as customized consulting services if they move to F5′s BIG-IP Application Delivery Controllers.

Suckers. The vultures are juuust about where Hackney wants 'em; they land on the wires, hyperconnect with 100G Ethernet – poof! – they're carbon dust.

Darren Boyce, managing director of VAR Applinet, claimed an increased focus from Nortel on its enterprise business would benefit its channel.

“Chapter 11 is the right choice for Nortel and it is a very commendable move,” he said.

“Some resellers will have a knee-jerk reaction, but it is important to stay calm. All the messages we are getting indicate they are focused on the enterprise and that is the future for Nortel.”

Boyce also claimed that the current climate could affect Nortel’s rivals and commended the company for its candid approach.

“Its competitors may go through this and will not be as open about it,” he said. “Nortel might be the first to do this, but I have a sneaking suspicion they will not be the last.”

“they are focused on the enterprise and that is the future for Nortel”

“competitors … will not be as open about it.”

    Theres Nortels next CEO.

RTP Nortel is probably a target for closure. Hackney is located there, but most of the Enterprise work is designed at Nortel Richardson and Ottawa. Assuming RTP is closed, I seriously doubt Hackney will survive. The rest of Nortel will go up for sale (MEN is already there) and Mike Z resumes leadership of the new Enterprise Nortel.

This is only the tip of the iceberg. What's not mentioned are the companies who didn't have to pony up a dime of incentives to snap up (ex-)Nortel customers. Nortel has two primary end customers: scrap metal yards and The Smithsonian.
