In the Spotlight: Mike Z.

Nortel CEO Mike Zafirovski was one of several people highlighted in a Toronto Star story who face huge challenges in 2009. At least, he was mentioned in the same group as President-elect Barack Obama.

‘Healthy core of Nortel would remain on which to rebuild, minus the hubristic exuberance of past CEOs’ – does that statement includes Mr. Z.; the worst tech CEO since John Scully?

Also, is it a coincidence that 40% percent (2 out of 5 corporate CEOs on that list, not counting the politicians –Obama & Ignattieff- come from GE?

So much for Jack’s Way; bunch of over-paid, over-hyped, country-clubbing, clueless CEOs. You substitute Nardelli (Chrysler) for Waggoner (GM), you end up with 60% flunkies. And Jack wonders what happened to capitalism. He singlehandedly turned it into ‘Greedism’.

Gordon Gekko — some fricking legacy!!! Thanks Jack; btw, I’ll drop-off up your dry-cleaning on my way LA…– bb

If Barack does as well as Mike did I guess we're in for a fun ride :)

Wow. I felt out of touch. Hope Nortel will be able to surpass all the challenges mentioned in that article.

BroadbandBill's comment that Mike Z is the worst tech CEO since John Scully is right on the money. Mike Z did well in GE and Motorola when the economy was (mostly) booming. It's very hard not to be successful in an environment like that – “a rising tide lifts all boats”.

Through an abundance of hubris and over-confidence, and plain incompetence, Mike Z took a company with products and technology and decimated it. Farewell Nortel.
