Nortel’s New Community

Nortel’s embrace of social media now includes a new element: a community site that features its blogs, forums, a tag cloud and table of the highest ranked users.

Whatever Nortel’s future holds, Bo Gowan is looking pretty good as he establishes himself as one of the leading corporate social media practitioners.

Folks – I'd really like to get some constructive feedback on the new Nortel Community page (http://community.nortel.com/go/index.jspa), as well as the new Buzzboard blog format (http://community.nortel.com/go/blogs/buzzboard).

I'm interested in comments on functionality, look and feel, as well as any bugs or navigation issues you come across. We're still working the bugs out so your input is appreciated.

PS – I'd also be interested to know whether you are being automatically redirected to the new blog location when you go to my old blog URL (http://blogs.nortel.com/buzzboard/)

    Hi Bo,
Your old blog URL gives me a page load error (i'm trying it from inside NT). fyi.

Works fine from here, glad to see the extra effort being dedicated in this area, good work Mr. Gowan.

I think it's a shame that Nortel has abandoned the fresh, bloggy feel of the old blogs in favor of the cold, dated design of the nortel.com site. It's clear that this is an application that was shoehorned into the existing, Web 1.0 design, and not very well at that — keeping arbitrary elements from the old design, like the headers, makes it seem like no one really gave the design very much thought. Further, this format makes the blog posts barely distinguishable from press releases, and, I think, does a real disservice to the good blogging Bo has been doing.

@one_of_the_few_left — yeah we were having some internal redirect issues yesterday. I think we have these fixed now, but if you're still getting load errors please let me know.

@mdeannam – actually I agree with you here, the blog does look like it's “shoehorned” into the existing nortel.com template. The look and feel isn't where we want to get it to yet.

The good news is that getting the new back-end platform was step 1, and there are plans to update the design in the new year so that we have a more smooth look and feel.

Yep, works fine today. Thanks (and I agree with mdeannam and you – i do not like the look and feel of it now… Can't wait to see it when you get the changes implemented.

Mr Gowan, I like the user interface design. It is obvious the thinking was to have a user interface that is consistent with the rest of the site to ensure consistent /ease of use for all users. I also find it very easy to navigate. If this is your first release you are onto something very good. Secondly if you based the new sub-site on a good social networking platform you are in excellent shape to evolve the solution. Well Done!
