A Strange History Lesson

When you see a story with the headline “A Brief History of Nortel Networks” and a lead sentence like this: “As Nortel Networks (NT) teeters on the edge, we might prepare to say our goodbyes by looking back on the company’s 113 years of existence”, it’s definitely an eye-catcher.

With all due respect, I think Larry MacDonald may be jumping the gun on writing Nortel’s corporate obituary. Sure, the situation is far from ideal but the patience is still alive.

I wouldn't be so quick to discount Larry's statements, he has done enough research on Nortel over the years, he might actually have it right.

  • Time to share…

Researching Nortel from the outside means that someone like Larry has to piece together the company's history from secondary sources. It may be possible to assemble a bunch of published “facts” but it is difficult to get a deep understanding of the organization itself (eg. the people, the processes, the culture). Even for those inside the company, this is difficult, because offices are spread across the globe and reflect many differing needs. I hope that Larry's future post (i.e. What does Nortel’s history say about its chances for survival and how more growth stories like Nortel might be created?) takes this into consideration.

Let's not forget Larry's article one week ago where he said:

“The financial crisis will not last forever. At some point, the dark clouds will move on. Throwing in the towel on the company because of a transitory downturn in circumstances may be like the investor who dumps their portfolio at the bottom of the bear market.”

    Larry who?

Even though I have been very critical of Nortel’s management (and only because they have made it so easy) I would like to see Larry MacDonald endure as long as Nortel has. How about “A Brief History of Larry MacDonald”.

Happy Thanksgiving to you too Larry…–bb

more management layers getting added as the technology office and services is moved back into buinsess lines. now 1 vp job becomes 3 for each unit and so on. the revolving doors just got activitated for a lot of managment.

I'm not familiar with cousin Larry, but optimist he is not. As an obituary, though, it wasn't a complete waste, especially as the deceased isn't yet so and might have the chance to influence the poetry before going cold.

Perhaps I may be so bold as to ask the wise fingers who contribute to this blog a treacherously simple question:

If you could throw away all prejudice and put out the hairs on fire to find a few moments to imagine a world where Nortel actually does come out of these troubles in good shape, when would be the right moment to jump in and buy some stock?

I know, I know, 10x extreme presplit and $3bill pension deficit and Mike Zero, but stock jumped 34% today. Surely someone must have benefitted? Is there no pie to go around?

Oops, forgot it was Thanksgiving, great time to sacrifice turkeys on the board, no? Anyways, happy Thanksgivings!

This patience has not proven to be good news. During its evolution, Nortel has increasingly exceeded the boundaries of patience.

The overwhelming disappointment and lack of credibility is profoundly astounding backed by enormous political and economic power holding so many hostage, perhaps involuntarizing patience if there is such a term =)

Nortel faces an increasingly dire challenges with declining business, cash, outlook, resulting in exhausting even more assets and staff with everyone increasingly questioning how much time this will buy.

Already losing money for a decade, evolving to liquidating resources, and now with almost all of their earnings in steep decline (area that accounts for 80-90% EBT /aging CDMA) how long can they survive even if they could sell MENs after monetizing headquarters /UMTS /desrisking aspirations / layoffs /etc…? Such patience would have surely been the envy of Jobe =)

Lucky to trade at all post bubble decline and ultimatum fraud settlement, how much time do they have left to rally the stock should it buy another day in speculation? A rally met by those waiting to sell on asset sale news or under the the threat of customers going on strike all at once in fear they woin't be around. Did they say how 2009 will fair?

The stock's sensitivity hinges on survival with a grossly unbalanced risk reward catalyzing to the downside as outlook worsens. Now at a fraction of when last neared folding.

Dare they operate for yet another year paying interest and costs losing even more even faster to prolong the increasingly anticipated inevitable insolvency.

Yet, the NYSE extended stocks trading below a dollar, the OSC/SEC leniency, and now the government perhaps extending the time for them to top off their pension shortfall, may renew speculation amid traditional disappointment with nothing to bank on.

Can this overwhelming patience and support extending the benefit of doubt result in buying enough time to make a difference. IU do not think so with things getting worse and faster with their numbers and outlook this go round.
Regardless of the patience, support, benefit of doubt, extending repair /deferring revenues or printing billions in high interest paper before loopholes are closed to creatively finance loss. Wait for what?

Perhaps a tad too premature for an obituary but it is on its deathbed this go round with nothing to save it almost everything, excluding patience, to defeat it =)

Thanks for the coverage and link. But I think you took the wrong interpretation. The sentence after the one you quote explains that the history is also offered “to see if there are any clues in the company’s past that indicate if and/or how it might be able to continue on (as a supplementary to [my pro-Nortel article "Is Nortel worth saving"]). So it's not an obituary. It' more of a nostalgic look back at the story of former tech superstar (as talk swirls of “going to zero”) to set up a discussion of what lessons their in its past has for its survival and future ( in a subsequent post).

    Larry,

From a communications perspective if you HAVE to explain it, you already missed the opportunity. Better luck next time…–bb

  • protosphere

    You are not Larry.
The writing style is too different.

From consistently using proper English in the article to poor grammatical prose and spelling in this brief reply indicates beyond any doubt you are not the author at all but a liar and a fraud.

It is disheartening to see that even this dog's challenged cheerleaders are so grossly unethical.

This is the same patronizing and back stabbing stalker who has been advocating to strong buy this stock from over 99% of its value to thsi day. The multi ID mad hatter polluting the Yahoo message board even after banned and his posts removed .

Everyone can probably already see this but it is good to make a point of exposing the truth here to protect the casual reader skimming this stuff from surprise or confusion.

Again, proof crooks are stupid, polluting public forums with false and misleading information for their vested interest. Shame on them if they had any. At least we don't have to deal with these crooks much longer given Nortel's outlook. =)

  • Tongue.In.Cheek

The Nortel-Must-Be-Destroyed Cult strikes again with another defamatory personal attack. As usual, if you do not follow the cult and desperately want to see Nortel destroyed you get labeled as a Fraud, Liar, Stalker and Crook.

No wonder the integrity of this blog is sinking into the sewer with crap like this personal attack and the other blatant nonsense that gets posted on her from The Cult.

Mark, just rename the blog to All About Destroying Nortel and be done with it. Then your little buddies that post these defamatory statements can have their safe haven home. With continued junk like this, there is no reason at all for a Nortel executive to ever grant you an interview. Honestly, why would they as long as you support and endorse these false statements and personal attacks.

I enjoy reading and participating on this blog, but I get disgusted with personal attacks like the one above from Protosphere.

  • The Psychiatrist

    proto,

you are the last one who should be criticizing someone else's use of the English language and grammar, you should be more concerned with your obsession to see Nortel fail .You come across as delusional the way you rant in many of your writings.

Go out and get yourself a girlfriend or boyfriend, there is more to life than ranting obsessions about a company the way you do.

Desk Jockey was smart enough to discover that first you, yourself post defamatory posts here under other IDs and after that you attack AAN and Mark Evans head on about the blog. He called it a provocation and he was right about that.
You are the crook and you have been exposed once again as I know you well.
    Noooo
It's not Nortel, managers, their accounting frauds, it's me and AAN who destroyed NT stock.
    How stupid it is?
    Think about that!
You have pumped NT stock nop matter what for the last 5 years!
    Did it change anything?
Do you think customers are stupid too, to come to AAN for advice?
They have reports written for them by the business analysts!
They don't need your advice or my bashing to buy Nortel products.
Nortel does not sell to retail customers which you would be able to convince that Nortel's systems are junk.
Nortel's customers who purchase for $100 mill or $1 bill are able to get professional reports and pay for them $4k!
How stupid are your childish accusations about our posts here?
Stop it and stop it right now!
Don't make an a$$ of yourself!
Is it too difficult for you to understand my English?
Desk Jockey told you the same in English as the first language, and you still don't get it!
    Why?

“If you weren't personally there, you can't possibly know all the facts. In other words, you may not judge a book by its cover.”

Hm. By that measure a, say, celebrity autobiography will always be superior to a biography written from the “outside”. Authors of history tomes rely heavily on second-hand pictures, mere eyewitness accounts, and copied documents, too, so do I need to take all historical data with a grain of salt forthwith?

Yeah, getting to know people and their culture is pretty touchy-feely – but Nortel needs customers and investors. Last I heard these folks still studied numerous headlines, crunched numbers, and continue to look to make a profit, not to meet people, broaden their cultural horizons and spread all wealth evenly.

They typically won't first walk a mile in the shoes of an employee in each office on each continent individually to bond with and glean deeper insight into a company's organization before ignoring cold hard stats and deciding its worth it to buy stock X because of its people.

Nortel's “give us another quarter” remains too vague – do they mean 3 months, or 25 cents? Or both?

Nortel's been in the business 100+ years yet it appears they themselves don't know all there is to know about their native culture, otherwise Larry MacDonald would perhaps be instead ghost-wirting a Paris Hilton “bio” nobody would buy.
