A Glass Half Full View
It has been brought to my attention from time to time that AAN has a tendency to highlight Nortel’s shortcomings while not giving enough attention to positive news and developments.
I’m not going to provide too strenuous of a defense other than to say there’s been far more negative news than positive news over the past year or so.
That said, I’m rooting for Nortel to find its way.
I’m hoping CEO Mike Zafirovski can deliver a new strategic direction that gives Nortel a good shot at being successful. As a proud Canadian, it’s important for Canada and our high-tech community for Nortel to be a vibrant player that employs thousands of people – many of whom go on to create and work for high-tech startups.
For Nortel to fail or be gradually sold off would be sad for Canada, Nortel employees and the ecosystem that Nortel supports in Canada. It would also be a tragic ending for one of the world’s oldest telecom suppliers with a history for innovation.
What I’d like to see – hopefully, Monday – is Nortel decide what it wants to be, and then go for it. It can’t continue to be all things to all people because it’s a strategy where you’re a mile wide and an inch deep.
If Nortel decides its fate is enterprise, software and services, it should aggressively embrace this strategy even if means eliminating thousands of jobs and selling non-core assets. If this is the strategic direction that Nortel wants to go,it should get its house in order and do what it needs to do to make it happen – be it strategic alliances, acquisitions, joint ventures, etc.
The old Nortel isn’t working; long live the New Nortel.
