Motorola to Cut 3,000 More Jobs

As speculation grows on how many job cuts Nortel will announce next week, Motorola said it will reduce operating expenses by $800-million in 2009. It will also eliminate 3,000 jobs, or about 5% of the workforce.

Ellen Daley, an analyst at Forrester Research Inc., told PC World that Motorola had to do something. “They have to do something at Motorola,” she said. “They are losing market share, they are bleeding and they are inefficient. Job cuts happen when you are not making enough money to support the jobs.”

    Grapevine rumor of two business units with carrier and enterprise. Morin is back in GM role or going to go. MEN could not be sold so most legacy and non-optical programs will be cut. MEN has about 1000 employees mostly based in Canada. Apparently there is a small location in Montreal which could be shut down.

    Services are going back into P&Ls. Likely Wendt is gone too.

    These are all things I've heard milling around as well.

    Good.

    Wendt: Totally ineffective, with a bloated organisation that offers, at best, little or no value to front line sales. Get rid. Quick

    Bill Nelson: Totally ineffective. The only thing that has come down from him in the last 10 months is "have you got a CRM number for that" before anyone does anything. Get rid. Quick.

    Mike Z. Enough said. Get rid. Quick

    Joel H: Should have gone because of the car park assault. Has an "anti-Midas" touch (everything he works on turns to ****)

    Morin: No strong opinion either way. Not visible enough though

    normally would expect 15% to 20% layoffs. thats 5000 to 7000 jobs. is going to survival now so whichever team, product, business unit is not contributing is pretty much gone.

    5000 = 250 million payout with 1 billion savings 2009 onwards
    7000 = 350 million payout with 1.5 billion savings 2009 onwards
    10000 = 500 million payout with 2 billion savings 2009 onwards

    Question would also be: Do these numbers include the people which are expected to leave with the intended sale of MEN? If is not yet sold, the workforce is likely to be reduced just to make it more "attractive" for a takeover. How many from and how many of top of MEN?
    As sad as this thinking is....
