web.alive Gets Some Love

The media may not be writing about Nortel’s strategic and financial prospects but the Ottawa Citizen has a lengthy feature on Nortel’s virtual world initiative called web.alive. You get more insight about Nortel’s virtual world/3D strategy at CTO John Roese’s blog.

  • Interesting post. I have stumbled and twittered this for my friends. Hope others find it as interesting as I did.
  • Still watching Nortel..
Its high time Nortel thought of What value this will add to the customer. More importantly, Nortel should put in its efforts to market and sell this product. There is no doubt that Nortel products are world class; however, it unfortunate that they dont find a market..
  • protosphere
    ottawa citizen said;
'Goal: Global leadership in telecommunications and networking' which struck me as a tad totalitarian, and hysterially ambitious realistically.

    and Roese said:
'Our goal is to create a better-than-reality communications experience through technology.' which sounds exciting and almost realistic.

Audio visual stimuli providing greater sensory input is expontially better at facilitating aquisision than disipline, sure.
This will even replace our contemprary teaching as we modernize!
The next wave, the intellectual revolution!
... something so simple, such a great future market

Now what can Nortel do competititvely and profitably in this space?

Maybe Nortel should project images on smoke. Add some mirrors, blue sky and 3 years later, r-r-r-reallly scarey as Count Floyd would say..
10b sales to 8b sales and 35k to how many employees...lookin to monetize and derisk...

... is anyone ever serious over there

top management dream team falling in the next 2 weeks....all the newcomers are leaving the boat.... watch and see

Major announcement around splitting the company in 2 divisions coming soon.... Major heads to roll....

Unless you have specifics or facts keep comments of speculation on the yahoo message board where they belong.
  • TheSkyisFaling
So nobody is speculating in this blog? better shut up and collaborate with something instead of criticizing other people.
  • Another Nortel Watcher
There are a lot of trolls on here posting in a style that tends to detract from the point they're making but the common theme is still valid. Until we're presented with an associated go-to-market strategy, I view web.alive as a technology boondoggle. Is interesting? Yes. Does it represent a possible mainstream form of interaction at some point in the future? Maybe (at best). Nortel has survival issues to deal with so why is this distraction allowed to continue? Take the money and give it to Mr. Wickware to improve his WiMax offer.

Take a look at who's running this Web.alive initiative for John Roese. A guy he brought in named Paul To. Google him. You won't find him. After he posted I Googled him and couldn't find anything so I had to message someone in Nortel to find out that he is at best a first or second level manager that John Roese brought in (along with a couple of others). No track record whatsoever and apparently no concept of business development either. This is what Nortel shareholders get from Mike Z's cabinet. Unimpressive, to say the least.
  • An Old Hand

    From http://www.nortel.com/corporate/nortel_on_norte...

"Paul To is the winner of Nortel's Most Hyperconnected Employee contest. The judges chose Paul because of his whimsical, yet serious top 10 list of reasons like taking 12 mobile/electronic devices that outweighed the rest of his luggage on a recent vacation and using his mobile phone to remotely monitor and control his home or to write 'real time' restaurant reviews. Paul has been known to buy underwear on amazon.com, automobiles on ebay, and keeps a Kindle device instead of magazines in the bathroom."

  • I should add the only thing hyper is the hyper-inflated sense of worth of this web.alive project.
  • So that's why he won. No wonder, inside job, makes sense given the overuse of terms like "hyper" and "unified", blah, blah blah.
  • hypedout
hope he is not buying underwear using the nortel network and time. 12 mobile devices outweigh the luggage (20 kg). whats he carrying. 1980s cell phones, 1988 PC with two floppy drives.

must have been a one heck of a swell vacation.

nortel should call it stay.alive instead of web.alive
  • exnt2
do the avatars look like the person. so nortel is now into graphic design. cool. good job Z.
  • exnt2
when the company is done, nortel emloyees still in turnaround dreamland can use it to work on more useless projects like this.

come on this is going to replace video conferencing, telepresence, google chat?? 3D voice??? the economy is burning. who cares about 3D voice. Cisco already has the technology. Whats the difference or just more 'me too' type of features.

maybe good for gaming but there is already second life. Roese has gone beserk. too much Z coolaid wine and its bad.
  • Tongue.In.Cheek
Think about it Mark, you could host AllAboutNortel in this virtual environment. Oh wait, that won't work too well as it would just turn into something like a Monty Python skit given the overall culture of this blog.

If people actually stopped and thought about this rather than instantly launching into yet another Bashing, they may understand that this could be useful in Distance Education and collaboration across a broad geography. A business can contain the environment within their own domain effectively eliminating security risks that can come with public services.
  • protosphere
    tonge in cheeks

as for monty python analogies, it was like the black night's limbless torso when nortel said its only a scratch. nortel was also compared to python's worlds deadliest joke...I would question whether this was proven correct as the more pressing issue

the second city "into the cornfield you go " is reiterated to those still pumping from 99% of its value with relentless unrepentant strong buys to this day, where she blowed up real fine, real good...

most is all fun and games and hope you don't take the humor too seriously

it is not the honest critics who stalk and get unethical accusing of mean spirited ill will towards employees, patronizing under one id while attacking under another, claiming they are paid to post or part of hedge funds, totalitarianly threaten, claiming wanting to steal shares driving price down, anonymously posting personal information on others, fabricating rumor, etc... not nice /critics have more to complain about this culture than the crass humor lacking happy talk

here we are at 12 cents presplit with pumpers treating the proven critics like they were the ones who were posting strong buy all the way down and with not one thankyou for the heads up... critics should protest instead

do you see the culture difference or politics by cheerleaders to those of proven critics the pumpers call bashers?

do you see how there is so much to bash and nothing to pump amid endless contradiction

this mony python culture is comic relief to a laughing stock, you should not take it to heart and perhaps substantiate any opposing views to enlighten proven critics... er bashers with credibility

as for this technology, it seems small ticket to me and will not save the day any more than Wimax or LTE, and the realistic bigger live stuff /cisco has a better teleconferencing system anyways, all being rather pricey too at 6 digits and up.... and as far as the business avatars, as python would say, silly... just silly.. =) there must be more to this, as it sounds just too utterly ridiculous, hysterical.
  • Tongue.In.Cheek
Shame on me for having an interest in technology and it's application to business. After all, this really is the All About BASHING Nortel Blog, where the mission is to see Nortel destroyed. I understand that you want to see them destroyed, and I fundamentally disagree with you.

However, I will continue to watch for clearly false information posted about Nortel, especially when it includes accusations that Nortel has done illegal acts according to SEC or NYSE rules and law. That in itself comes extremely close to Internet Security Fraud and should be called out. No wonder the Nortel-Must-Be-Destroyed Cult never posts on the various Nortel managed Blogs as it would subject you to legal cause.

Go ahead and continue your rants and I will continue to be supportive of interesting technology and the pointing out of false and misleading information for the purpose of damaging Nortel.

Perhaps Mark should take the bold step and rename this blog for what it really is. It is unforntunate that this blog hasn't turned that direction.

Let me explain it to you once again, TIC
I see you come here to attack public. Yes we gather here, help each other to protect our interest against all lies and frauds from Nortel. You dare to attack investors for talking about risks involved in getting NT stock into our portfolios. NT is a portfolio killer. Look at the chart genius.
You said you work for Nortel. Nortel and NT stock is like a marriage, horse and carriage and I am telling you brother.you don't have one without the other.
Lets talk about lies, lack of vision, misleading statements and obvious frauds.
the last one, single digit growth confirmed on many different occasions many times before finally Mike Z admitted he did not see that. OK he did not see, but what about his cabinet and subordinates? Who is really to blame for that lack of vision. What accountans do to feed CEO with right numbers?
Selling UMTS was with trumpeting 4G. Today Mike says that he will retrack the investment , de-risk that technology. Who is to blame for that? Mike signed the papers but who fed him wrong ideas? How many nortel's employees were involved in the creation of that business plan?
    another one
Owens signed bsnl deal but how many Nortel's employees prepared that deal which lost $1 on $1 of revenue. It's not like Nortels employees all are perfect just the management is crooked and green_not experienced! So you come here TIC and want to blame millions defrauded families for Nortel stock sliding down to oblivion with high speed? In last 5 years I protected my family and my friends into putting their money into that stock. What did you do for your friends TIC. I see your posts Strong Buy all the way down!
  • Tired
You see, I don't have any problem with people slamming Nortel for its wrongs, or for pointing out facts about the company's performance. I applaud a true effort to warn people away from something that may cause them harm. But let's face it - that's not your aim. You like to malign. You like to throw spears at things even when its not called for. If Nortel turned around today and introduced some fantastic new technology that was going to make billions (how I wish!) you would right off the bat start making up crap about how flawed the technology is, how nobody will buy it, and how everyone else already does the same thing, only better. Blah, blah, blah. The only thing you seem to want to talk about more than Nortel is yourself. I don't know if today is one of your better days, but thank God the post above is not filled with twenty compliments to yourself for being the all-seeing oracle of all thing finance and technology. I think I said this already yesterday, but I'll say it again. You're clearly an intelligent person. And you seem to have some good things to offer. But you make extreme and harsh statements, and I truly think that some of the things you say were pulled clean out of your *ss. Since you're not buying Nortel now, and won't again, and since everybody has the benefit of seeing your many negative posts, can't you just go away now? After all, what's the point of you staying here if Nortel is going to just disappear (as you say). Bye. Go away now. Please.

You see, you don't understand stock market.
    Bulls and Bears
Nortel was lucky for soooo long.
On 20 or so well known analysts only one or 2 were Bearish. Most of them in last years were Bullish. It did not help NT stock anyway, did it?

Why do you come to the kitchen anyway. It's getting hot!
    Bye to you too.

Distance education? How about video confrence? Where teacher and student interact and see real world things.

All this is is a fancy chat room. That is all this is. It is a place to meet and talk. About all you get from this is an avatar to go with your voice and your able to move from one make believe office to another. You don't see the person your talking to nor do you actualy see anything relevent to the real world. it is just a place to talk. What is so inovating about this? What does this offer that UC doesn't? The fancy avatar?

So the anser to your question, Yes some of us have thought about this. Have you?
  • Tongue.In.Cheek
Have you listened to the 3D Audio Demo on the Projectchainsaw site? I have and better understand the value of what the audio brings to the table. It could also become an interesting way to improve customer service. Lots of different applications when bandwidth isn't readily available to support video.

I'd probably wear a virtual jute costume. Because jute is "green".

Won't this technology invariably use more electricity than a plain old conference call, also contradicting the idea that simplicity trumps complexity?
  • rizcorpl
If they are smart, it could be a huge revenue generator. Could make advertising money from free copies with ads or from purchased product that would be ad free.
  • notafan
so i would expect johny roesey and his developers on web.alive to be number 1, 2, and 3 on z's list of people to go.

whats the roi going to be like for this project? would it have been any different if they gave me the money instead and i went to spend it all in vegas? unless.... are they planning on paying employees in virtual dollars?
  • Lobk
This is where some of the development money went to? I'm lost for words. The upper management are living in a virtual/fantasy world, that's the only explanation I can come up with for them to spend money on this. This isn't the Nortel of old where it has so much money it can spend it on crazzy ideas and believe me they've been doing plenty of that already. But this...this. Wow, I'm lost for words.

Lets develope something in the fantasy realm and try to sell another product in a market that is so small it wouldn't make a bleep on the radar. With free products like half life already offered, lets compete against free.
  • NTEmployee
Looking forward to the virtual world... but I bet I'll get jammed into a 6x8 cube in the virtual world as well.
  • The Left Behind
it is a great technology but IT IS NOT A PRODUCT that NT can sell

Actually NT has a record of creating great technologies but failed to turn them into products that you can monetize.

Web.alive wont be a product pretty soon so it wont have any impact in the financials bottom line.

Brain death... tic-tac... 180 days to live.
  • I have to admit I'm entirely confused about how web.alive will help Nortel.

It is a 3D virtual world with 3D positional audio. Basically Second Life or the upcoming PS Home on NortelRoids.

Perhaps it is an upcoming omen as to the future of Nortel? Entirely "virtual"? Hey, look, you can have your own entire office... in web.alive. We even offer Venetian blinds and an indoor swimming pool.
