The picture is the left wing spoiler being deployed... a safe assumption with it being full up is that right one has also been deployed, this represents the flight is ending, we will be landing soon. Please fasten your seat belts and assume the crash position...
  • stillThere
That's the aileron that's in the up position at the end of the wing, and it means the plane is turning, or beginning to turn, to the left. And those are the flaps that are being deployed, or retracted, inboard of the wing. Spoilers are on the top of the wing and none are shown deployed in that picture.

Its a wing from a Qantas jet and Qantas, Qantas never crashed.

looks like a bloodbath. us corps are laying off in the 1000s. also hear Canadas Dept of Defense is looking to take over the ottawa campus. nortel plans to move out to a smaller location as size will reduce to 3k or 4k.
  • TheSkyisFalling
the picture actually represents the sunset... the sky is falling

Whats the emergency drill "assist yourself, then your child". What are the kids to expect come Nov 10?

do not ever think of working for nortel. if you ever work for a company like nortel, then learn how to take the quickest exits.

  • If that picture is a brighter future, then who is the pilot?

Good news? Any rumors on how small the work force will be next year? 10% Smaller? 20% Smaller?
  • Nortel_cheer_leader
could this be the view from Mike's new jet...?

Symbolism: We are flying on a wing and a prayer ?
  • many
I don't know but the flaps are down (an effort to gain lift durring takoff). Perhaps failure to deply the flaps has been the problem?
  • broke
nortel could not afford a better picture. marketing has thrown in the towel. pr does not care i.e. been there, done that, does it matter.
  • exnt2
or could be the light from the sun (analysts, shareholders, industry, customers, employees) in the poor pilots eyes (Z) that he has to move out of the blindng scrutiny.

symbolism of the 45 degree bank. shuffle the employees and management around. keep everyone guessing until it spins out of control and crashes to the ground.

also employees know the exit doors but cannot crank them open and get out without the parachute (package).

another symbolism, the wing panels looks a bit old. translate to rusty old product lines.

also looks like burning gas with the tanks running close to emtpy. in other words, Z and co are going to shout Mayday Mayday.
  • frozen-in-fear-insider
As for symbolism, this appears not to be the tail but the left wing of an aircraft; and given the relative position of the sun one would think the plane is on a sharp bank of 90 degrees and headed for ground at an ever increasing speed. Somebody please finally put me out of my misery and hand me my well earned blue folder in trade for my badge...
We survivors worked too hard to make "the 3-5 yr plan" work and deserve every penny of that 360M$
  • Tongue.In.Cheek
No doubt the Nortel-Must-Be-Destroyed Cult sees the plane in a hard bank after a Pearson Airport departure and heading directly for The West Mall. They're all in Bolton waiting to celebrate the crushing blow.
  • exnt2
a picture says a 1000 words. need I say any more.

people like you can live in dreamland, swallow the coolaid, think conspiracy theory and ignore reality.

when it crashes and it dawns upon you, we can see what you have to say. I dont think it would be any positive - youd join the very people you call a cult today.
  • less
I see global warming happening there. Nortel has nothing to do with global warming - except for Mike Z cuz he's uh, an American.
    Just ask the Nortel-Is-Green Cult.
  • Nortelfoot
I'd say the blue sky represents IBM and the plane signifies the speed at which our jobs will be outsourced there. The white clouds represents Mike Z's 3-5yr restructuring plan.
  • Nortelhand
Mike Z your capt. has announced that everying is OK and you are to stay in your seats.
  • exnt2
as nortelhand says, seatbelt sign is on, so stay put to ride out this turbulence (cant say we are crashing yet or everybody will panic).

Z and co-pilot Pavi have the cockpit hatchets (exit package) to hack their way out when it crashes. Crew has been called to the front to assist themselves in case of a crash.
  • NOTthereanymore
Monday call just means Z can use the re-structuring announced next week as a response to what will be terrible 3rd quarter news "it sucks, but look, my clever team and I have yet another plan to fix it" .

More than 5000 layoffs coming, and the same brain trust that has brought NT to this wonderous moment, will be making the live - die decisions for the company. Given their history, the results of their next (and surely last) brilliant plan, will result in a lot of NT families having miserable holidays whether they are staying on the sinking ship or laid off.
  • joremero
I am not against outsourcing, I am just against giving jobs to incompetent people wherever they live or whatever their place of origin
  • An Old Hand
Well, you get what you pay for, don't you?
  • exnt
THERE WILL BE BLOOD!!!!! With lousy results and low stock price, Mike Z will resort to the common business solution: layoffs and outsourcing.
  • Nortel_cheer_leader
I just hope the restructuring comes with new leadership teams, the folks just didn't delivery on strategy or end results (revenue) Part of the 5000 need to be the leadership team under Z... they have to go!
  • Daphne
If they canned the entire leadership team under Z they could probably save enough $$ to avoid any other lay-offs.

    I'm just saying...
  • Accountant
It could also be interpreted as the view you'd see from a grave just before the dirt is piled on.

    I'm just saying.
  • layoffs
360 million restructure costs - closure etc = 5000 layoffs

Monday may not be good as layoffs likely are targeted for next week

300 million cash for pension plan. goodness. this company is going to burn money literally. anybody doing the math.
  • Buy Nortel
A "Monday" release..good news is coming...
  • europe
yeah .... superstition will let the share rise like Phoenix ... ;-)
  • Nortel watcher
For those folks that want to read positively into the symbolism of the above picture, does the tail of the airplane suggest Nortel will leave the competition in the rear?

I certainly would like to given the destructive effects of layoffs on Nortel families but, simply put, the company lacks cash reserves to ride out the financial crisis estimated to last another 18 months.

In my view, management is once again trying to pull some wool over stakeholders' eyes in an attempt to delay the inevitable.
