The Markets Are Just Nasty

With Nortel’s Q3 results out in a couple weeks, it has been fairly quiet on the news front.

On the stock markets, there has been no lack of news (unfortunately!). With the Dow, S&P and Nasdaq each down 5% today, Nortel shares touched a 52-week low of $1.45.

On another note, Mobile Tech Today has an interesting story, “Debt-Heavy Telecoms Won’t Escape the Credit Crunch”.

Wake up Mark. A 52 week low?????
How about a 52 year low

  • Ryan

Actually Nortel ended up holing up very well today ending up on the TSE (2 cents)and only slightly down (2 cents) on the NYSE when the other stocks in the same space was down significantly including Alactel-Lucent (-8.3%), Motorola
(- 11.3%) and Noika (-9.62%). However, as usual with your posts about Nortel Mark you will always point out the negative even where the negative news is misleading. Par for the course I guesse.

  • Ryan

I meant to say “holding” not “holing”

  • protosphere

ya, holding up real well, who are you trying to fool

It made a new all time low today on NYSE of 14.4 cents extreme 10X reverse split,

Are the other companies you mentioned trading at all time lows headed to bankruptcy?

They had enough insurmountable woes in their struggles let alone face upcoming global financial turmoil, this isn't a the perfect storm but a supernova, overkill, like nuking a fly

Look at their outlook and history. Their aging CDMA commenced decline that accounts for most their earnings when already losing money for a decade, even in times of boom this would be their final nail in their coffin let alone now….

Printed Nortel paper to pay one of the largest fraud settlements in history, bonuses the most common motive to this type of fraud but they fought to keep them at kangaroo shareholders meeting, and every lawyer in Toronto knows even the green team is still pay happy as the company, shareholders, and employees lose. Hype to contradiction = no credibility.

A few events off the top of my head are slandered Gary, defrauding MOT contracts, initially unannounced BSNL deal to loss, even ethics officer departing / new auditors after so many insider only CFOs / sold assets / ongoing layoffs /PEC worth half as much / Hackney's contribution to enterprise replacing veteran, etc., lots of history leading up to all this /we can fill pages and page and pages… endless… its a laughing stock, a dog on its deathbed

    now;
Cash declines, orders decline 25% last quarter
Looking to even derisk LTE as they did long boasted WiMax
Trying to sell MENs to afford more layoffs and live yet another day
CEO's deperate plea to employees as he seeks to fire many of them /like they can influence extrinsic forces or are slacking or something / I think customers went on strike as numbers contradict support

Done all they could when cuts are not enough and can't grow the business /quite contrary in accelerated decline to zero now, q2 cash from 3.07B to as low as 2.6B q3? Yikes…

Revising single digit growth to decline midstream 2008 forecasts as much as CEO's 20 buck buying opportunities Aug/07 as it sits hit $1.44 today

    ……endless…just endless…

Business made simple, zero means zero, they are headed to just that, zero… this was the way like for Lemmings, or Beyond Boundaries with fraud trials looming…. funny terms /strange company

Moodys warns /Altzman score warns, it will fold this time trading at a fraction of last time /43 cents

The markets may be nasty lately but Nortel is the nastiest of them all, by far, hands down. all the others aren't screaming to zero at light speed.

it is not holding up well if it is making new all time lows relative to other by far from heading to insolvency even if NT went up on a down day… the inevitable looms… zero.

Does anyone has any insight to the organizational changes that are going to come next month? I heard that Mike Z is going to change the entire set up. Is that true?

  • Ryan

    Protosphere,

As usual you ignore material facts and distort the facts to make your point which is always the same. Mark's Post pertained to the performance of Nortel on October 21, 2008. The operative word in my post was that Nortel held help well TODAY; I did not insinuate that the stock was holding up well generally as clearly this is not the case. I just wanted to point out that Mark's email always seem to have negative slant/tone even where the post which adressed YESTERDAYS stock performance should have pointed out the positive instead of always focussing on the negative.

It appears to me Protosphere that you are simply a digsruntled ex-nortel employee who was let go as part of the restructuring process or perhaps terminated for other reasons. Your emails are nothing more than sour grapes which often misrepresent the facts

  • yes4aapl

Your emails are nothing more than sour grapes which often misrepresent the facts
    ========re
why don't you just focus on correcting facts?
    and
Proto pointed out very important fact that yesterday NT stock made yet another lowest level not seen for ages. That's what we do, recording new lowest levels.
How low NT can go before CH11?
    LEH stopped trading at $3.50!

  • The Psychiatrist

why don't you just focus on correcting facts?

    ==========re

CH 11 doesn't happen with $2.7 billion in cash on the books

why don't you focus on correcting the facts and stop with your CH11 BS!

You care nothing about current shareholders, because if you did you wouldn't accuse them of being crooks just because they don't conform to your negative views.

The reality is that you and proto have an agenda and it is proven by your obsessive round the clock fear mongering over on the yahoo message board about Nortel going bankrupt etc…

Nortel shareholders are most likely mature enough and old enough to make their own decisions about investing in the company.

thanks but no thanks-your overzealous warnings of doom and gloom I'm afraid are not necessary,so why don't you kindly let dilpomacy rule the day and stop imposing your agenda driven point of view!

  • Nortel watcher

    TBC,
You've raised a new topic altogether. What I can say is that layoffs have begun at least in Nortel's CALA operations in Sunrise, Florida. If you're making above $9K monthly, you are a target. I don't know how the severance package is looking like yet.

  • Tired

You know, it is possible that the company cannot recover from its current situation. And it's also possible that they can, even if it isn't real likely considering the way the industry looks right now and how tight the credit market is. But can't you just stop repeating your endless verbal spittle of pathetic over-negative crap?

  • joremero

This is an absurd comparison, LEH's and NT's business are very very different…. you should know better…

  • 52 week low=buying opp

Move along Protosphere….get back to your X-Box live game..the team needs you. Maybe you should start an Ericsson blog? What could be the motivation for posting your rambling diatribe? Obviously you don't own any shares. Certainly you are not a Nortel employee?

  • Shackled

I could handle it a little bit better if it was in I-N-G-R-I-S-H!!!!!

  • Nortelhand

    Mark,

You are doing a good job, don't change your bloging.

  • NortelMania

WOW. I heard the total number of layoffs would be between 7k-10k.

  • Nortel watcher

    Psychiatrist,
Proto's gloom and doom comments have been in the past 3 to 4 years very much on the money. He was warning investors about the stock plummeting since then and it turned out to be true. He commented about CDMA revenues having peaked for NT and that they would begin to decline. I recall that was 18 months ago and sure enough, analysts shorttly thereafter echoed the same sentiments.

You are right about NT's $2B+ cash account being the unlikely profile of a Ch11 BK company. However, no one that matters within the company (i.e. management) believes in NT; otherwise, why aren't they buying stock in the open market like ceo MZ did a year ago followed by CoB H Pearce beyond their employment contract requirement?

  • exnt2

NT just passed below Ciena in market cap. I predicted this was going to happen. Next stop now to Extreme's market cap at 250 million.

  • Johneee

Stock is getting hit hard again today. Share price aside, does anybody have any idea what Nortel would get per share in the event of a sale?

  • protosphere

One can stick their head in the sand and hope for happy talk attacking the bearer of bad news or face the facts honestly and bravely.

Closed a $1.19 today… down 22% in one day…makes ongoing lows as the norm than exception it seems.

As for buying opportunities, we have heard them for years, every time it makes a new low. Poor devils who heeded that wonderful investment advise.

Look at costs/cash burn and they can't even afford the cuts to salvage what they can at a fraction of its size profitably in my opinion. Zero, got that? Digest it well. The bigger they are, the faster they fall.
