Dealing with Corporate Trash

Oscar
Last week, Nortel issued a report card on its environmental performance from 2000 to 2006.

Not sure if Nortel’s crackerjack PR folks played a part in spinning the news but the Globe & Mail has a story looking at how businesses are dealing with their trash.

Here’s a nice section on Nortel:

“Faced with a mountain of obsolete networking boards and wires each year, Nortel Networks Corp.’s engineers and managers contracted with Global Electric Electronic Processing Inc., whose facilities break the waste down to the metals and components, salvaging and reconfiguring as much as possible.

Nortel’s contracted investment recovery centres last year received more than four million kilograms of waste, or the weight of the 67 Abrams tanks. Almost one third was reused or redeployed and the remainder was recycled. In all, less than 5 per cent ended up in a garbage dump.

Today, Nortel’s environmental stewardship has helped secure it a spot in the Dow Jones Sustainability North America Index.”

First thing that struck me was boy that's a lot of obsolete equipment =)

and…oh-oh, I was just waiting on the edge of my chair to hear something about their coffee budget given Ebbers fretted about coffee-filter expenses and wanted the bottled-water machine filled with tap water…. and here it is “and they line up at the cafeteria with their coffee mugs to get a discount for not using a disposable cup, “… and yep. you got it, discouraging bottled water…

When will the puns ever cease =)

and It was that black juice from hell that made them do it yer honor =)

execs are green. they have shiny, beautiful cappucino, expresso machines.

And the whining never stops. Amazing how anything that Nortel does gets twisted and embellished into something negative and out of context for what is actually being done or reported.

Some see the exec as half empty, the True Thinker objectively considers all the Facts concludes he's half full.

    “Dealing with Corporate Trash”.

In that context, I see that John Manley is one of the potential contenders to replace Dion as the Liberal Party leader in Canada. It is the duty of every Nortel shareholder in Canada that has been betrayed by Nortel to help people understand that John Manley has presided over the destruction of Nortel. As a board member he participated in the selection of Mike Z as CEO and along with his fellow board members has done NOTHING to correct the resulting downward spiral of the value of the company. Is that the guy you want contending for leadership of Canada? Is that the guy you want doing nothing to protect the economy the same way he's done nothing for Nortel? Destructive inaction should have consequences. Please help to get the word out. Tell your friends and neighbors and post it on as many blogs as you can. Good luck.

    Manley is disgusting.
He has done nothing anywhere his entire life but walk around in a suit as a politician trying to give the perception that he knows what he is doing. You are 100 percent correct about Manley.

What a difference ten years makes. That was when untold tons of perfectly good telco machinery wound up in Nortel's Dumpsters because it was cluttering up valuable lab space.
