Is Cisco Greener?

Apparently, Cisco is greener (more green?) than Nortel.

According to ABIresearch, Cisco edged out Nortel and HP when it came to evaluating “network switching vendors’ internal green initiatives as well as the greenness of their switches”.

ABI said Nortel has the “greenest switches” – “Its switches have been optimized for low power consumption. While Nortel’s power consumption tool is far from perfect, it does offer network managers a useful way of examining power consumption across several different vendors’ products.”

There is another link under the category of personal finance but it has nothing to do with finance. If you have difficulties in making payment, you can click the link named wachoviabank.com. You will have an expert helping you to fix your problems and you don’t have to go out of your home to get the service. What you need to do is to choose a button between the two “call us today” and “we’ll call you”. Don’t you think this service shows the attentiveness and consideration of the Wachovia? It’s really good in my opinion.

I never heard about www.wachoviabank.com like this before. Thank for this.

Interesting comments, but there seems to be a bunch of whiners here who miss the point of the tests. The test was not to compare a DMS-100. What enterprise needs that type of test? This was a test of enterprise equipment which is far more pervasive geographically.

Everyone raise your hand if you have a router or Ethernet switch at home. Keep your hand raised if your office has data network routers and Ethernet switches. Now lower your hand if you own a carrier class voice network. Is your hand still raised? :-)

My point is that this is a great thing to keep an eye on... Lets do the math... Millions of routers * ### Watts per hour consumed = a lot of potential money to save.

I'm glad Nortel jumped out there any poked the other guys, but not completely from a Nortel bias standpoint. If Cisco, Juniper and Lucent step up and compete, our datacenter costs could drop no matter who you buy from. how is this not a good think to focus on in the current economic crisis? Less recurring cost of operation = money saved that can be put towards expanding your datacenter..

Hell, it might save enough for you to keep your pretty car and 6 figure income. (Trust me, put it towards your kids college fund instead of the car).

"Nortel" is greener as it shares with the word "green" the letters "n" , "r" "e".

    "Cisco" and "green"? Zip.

"Cisco" and "Nortel" - "o". As in "Oh, yeah, I should've noticed that."
  • Concerned
When Nortel is bankrupt we'll definately have the greenest products !

What a dumb metric for us to focus on during this time of crisis.

Who is greener doesn't matter; who is profitting matters a lot!

Only way Nortel leads in being greener is with envy or lack of experience. =)

I guess this is like listening to stock analysis or as the other saying goes with the tag line "everyone has one"

I don't this Cisco did as well in this one that just showed. http://www.networkworld.com/news/2008/101608-green-it-ibm-hp-leaders.html

Its like Jim Cramer yelling BUY WACHOVIA........

It mentions "internal green initiatives" so maybe they counted how many employees drove a Prius or wore green shirts to work :P
  • Callmecrazy
So if Nortel has the Greenest Switches and the Power consumption tool from Nortel is so good...how did Cisco Edge out Nortel? Seems like no matter what conclusion....people put on the Cisco shades and drink that koolaid.
  • Another Nortel Watcher
Nortel's Enterprise switches are just one piece of Nortel's broader business. If you look at Nortel's aging Carrier portfolio, you'll find some energy hogs.
  • NortelNoMore
Yip, those ATCA require so much cooling that it's a deafening experience when you have to visit the labs.
  • Ex Nortel@India
Agree 100%.. In the carrier space (DMS100, MTX, ATCA)... All these prodcuts are POWER GUZZLERS!!! Service operators need to take extra care of Nortel's POWER HUNGRY equipment....If thats what is going Green.. Yes.. Nortel is GREENER :))
