Nortel to Build Virtual NOC in India

Nortel is building a virtual network operations centre (NOC) in Bangalore India to serve the needs of 140 customers currently being serviced from NOCs in Raleigh, N.C. and London.

Why Bangalore?

Nortel expects to reduce its costs by 30% to 35% compared with running a NOC in the U.S. or Europe. “There will be transition costs as customers get shifted here,” Dietmar Wendt, president with Nortel’s global services unit, was quoted in the Hindu Business Line.

The Bangalore NOC will employ 100 people. It will be the second Indian NOC for Nortel, which currently has one in Gurgaon that manages the telephone networks of customers such as Bharti Enterprises and CLSA in India and the Asia-Pacific region.

Wendt said Nortel is exploring the idea of setting up a multimedia network operations centre in India. This NOC would manage, store, distribute and archive multimedia content, communication and video conferencing sessions for Nortel customers in India now being serviced by a NOC in Beijing.

I wonder if Dietmar ever considered that his North American customers can't stand
talking to support in India, they never resolve anything and wind up referring tickets back to the states or Canada. It seems like regional centers in NA, EU, and Asia would make more sense. The salaries of 100 North American employees can't be worth that much to the bottom line. Inexperience and the language barrier are just too much to bear.

If they thought they could save 5 bucks, they would build a NOC in North Korea.

Does Hogan know what Colonel Klink Wendt is doing in India? A NOC is very capex intensive, not very opex (labor cost) intensive. Why do it in India? Also, what happens if there is unrest in India, do the networks go unmanaged??
