    1 + 1 = -2? So they're marketing a report on what they consider to be a bad idea?

Also the page linked is dated
    Feb 2008, Pages: 10

so maybe Nortel management took their conclusions to heart?

An aquisition of NT by IBM isn't about tin or networks, it's about software, SOA and Web 2.0. NT are already working with IBM in this area and have a strong applications portfolio which will fit snuggly into IBM's SOA. The market has already moved past unified communications and the latest and greatest technology and moving towards applications integration of communications. Oracle, SAP and Microsoft are well under way with this so NT brings a bunch of capability and technology to IBM.

Nortel and SOA? Nortel and ‘a strong applications portfolio’? Surely you jest. IBM does not need from Nortel that which Nortel could never deliver. IBM, just like Microsoft, is sucking all the VoIP knowledge Nortel has because IBM knows that in the emerging SOA-centric world voice will be a feature and not an application, as Nortel believes. A feature, just like changing the background colors on a ppt. A FEATURE! — bb

Don't forget that IBM (and Microsoft) knows that the Nortel installed base is going to need a changeout, and it's becoming more and more urgent as Nortel stumbles towards collapse. IBM will want a big piece of that action, particularly the services piece. Ericsson bought Marconi for the same kind of reason. In fact, go read through the press on Marconi in late 2002. Nortel is the latest 'Marconi'.

    ANW,

We can argue whether Nortel is the next Marconi, 3Com or DEC ad nauseum but fact remains that once both MSFT and IBM extract what they need from NT (via their ‘partnerships’) NT becomes just another empty used box. No one at Nortel is smart enough (least of all their CTO) to figure out that IBM is only using them. As the old saying goes, if the milk is free no need to buy the cow. For more on this, please see the very insightful comment by a top industry analyst published 2 years ago that Nortel’s management completely ignored. Blinder than…–bb

BB – Sure, we're on the same page. The sad part is that more than one leader in Nortel is probably naive enough to think that they're 'using' Msft and IBM to get into the Msft and IBM channels.
