Why Nortel is Doing Video

The discussion about why Nortel is encouraging its employees to make videos about the company’s “green” strategy has been live, interesting and a study in contrasts.

In the interest of fairness, you should check out Nortel Buzzboard today where Bo Gowan explains why Nortel has embraced video.

I was e-mailed with the scoop that a sprinkler head burst at the Nortel Campus in Richardson today and the building was evacuated, then afterward the front lobby was jam-packed with people returning to their cubicles. That would've made a excellent promotional video: “Customer surge at Nortel”

Or maybe Mike Z broke that sprinkler on purpose, to do just that??? I would almost bet the fire dept. finds a Cisco sticker on the defective spinkler head.</thinker>

  • Tongue.In.Cheek

Of course Mike Z deliberately broke the sprinkler head for the purpose of giving this blog even more garbage to create and spread about him and the company.

No, it was the smoke from Richard Lowe's office as the Carrier business continues to go up in flames.

  • still a nortel slave

Truth is it was deliberately broken so the R&D folks on that side of the building had to evacuate. When they tried to get back in after it was “fixed” their badges no longer worked. The guard then told them to meet in a room where HR was waiting.

This is the new lay-off process developed by Six-Sigma Black Belts, who were safe from any flooding in the Tower across the way.

Wow, this board sounds more all the time like a bunch of kids sitting around the locker room snapping towels at each other. And I thought school was back in session in most of the USA and Canada…

Mark – this is a good blog. It has regular participation and the right level of moderation. Open dialog is supported provided it remains at a professional level.

The general atmosphere is negative right now, but I think that's an accurate reflection of the feeling in the market towards the leadership, the results, and the stock price. If/when things change and real positive results are realized, I believe the atmosphere of the blog will change too.

Nortel leadership would do well to think of this blog as a kind of market barometer.

Still, I see a lot of bitterness here. If you guys spent as much time doing work as complaining then maybe things would turn around a little faster.

  • Frank Burch

Less- you are so correct. The bitterness is so bizarre. Why don't these clowns just quit? I guess they will get the axe eventually. If they hate the place sooooo much, they can't be doing very good work.

  • NewBlue

“If they hate the place sooooo much, they can't be doing very good work.”

That is such a non sequitor.

It's not hate…it's frustration. Their frustration…and mine…is/was a result of pouring out so much effort and seeing so little in return for it. Jobs are being outsourced, wages are fairly stagnant (especially when you factor in cost of living increases against low or no raises), benefits aren't in line with the competition, but the demand is ever present and continues to grow: more work by fewer engineers and less time to do it. If there's an actual decline in the quality of the product, perhaps it has more to do with that than their attitude.
