Motorola Riper for a Deal with Nortel

Motorola looks increasingly vulnerable these days after it posted a 21% decline in first-quarter sales and a net loss of $194-million. The big shocker was a 40% drop in the mobile phone business to $2.1-billion.

With Motorola scrambling financially, maybe the idea of a marriage/deal with Nortel looks more appealing as a way for two struggling telecom equipment providers to join forces to become a stronger enterprise player.

Fortget about any deal between Mot and NT. Carl's sole purpose is to break up Mot and sell them in pieces. He doesn't wanna buy anything, especially losing-market Nortel.

I wonder if Motorola wants to re-engage in the Enterprise business again? Many years ago they owned Motorola/Codex and Universal Data Systems during the days of multiplexing and high speed modems, before LANs and PCs became the way to go. Eventually they divested both businesses when they missed the transition to LANs etc.

I can understand interest in Nortel's Wireless and Wireline businesses but am sceptical on their interest in Enterprise. What happens with Nortel's Enterprise business should this interest get some legs? Perhaps Juniper expresses an interest in Enterprise to have a more complete portfolio to compete against Cisco?
