Pangia Gets Promotion

Pangia
Michael Pangia must have been doing some good things for Nortel in Asia and/or they really need to fill the newly-created position as senior vice-president, global sales operations and strategy.

Here’s the official statement from Bill Nelson, EVP, global sales:

“We are driving towards world-class sales operations and customer focus, and Michael Pangia, with his recent experience leading our operations in a highly competitive region, is the right executive to take us to the next level. Simplifying processes, increasing the effectiveness of customer interaction, improving seller productivity and driving overall operational effectiveness are the hallmarks of a winning company. We are putting the global strategy in place to build our business, and Michael’s global operational experience and deep Nortel knowledge will allow us to execute rapidly and deliver value to our customers and to the company.”

Pangia is currently president of Nortel’s Asia Region. Nortel’s had sales of $1.76-billion in Asia last year, compared with $1.73-billion in 2006 and $1.42-billion in 2005.

Give me a break. If he did something good he would stay in Asia. In 2008, China Mobile and China Unicom will spend $21B in total to expand their GSM/CDMA network, NT would need him there if he was good. What is Global Sales Operations and Strategy? Strategy means talk without doing the real thing.

Newly created position = expanding executive leadership team = higher SG&A….good move Mike !

Isn't Nortel supposed to move out of China in protest of it's human rights abuses in TIbet? Americans will do anything for a quick buck, but I'd expect (Canadian) Nortel execs to forget about the almighty dollar for a minute and instead dangle from European bridges in solidarity with the little people. Euros would send its stock soaring.

This is re-cycling of poor leadership at its best.

Which major deal did Pangia really win against the computation? Going with Z's mentality, Did Pangian achieve 20% market share for any business unit in his region?. Why there is no specific mention to any numbers he achieved?. This looks like pure internal politics and internal people marketing that gives shareholders, nothing. What shareholders want is GROWTH, sales GROWTH.

I mentioned before that Nortel Sale organization is one major issue they have with their lack of drive, poor understanding of products and fat salary structure that give's them huge comfort zone even with under-performing. To see existing leaders re-cycled is a sad story.

Mike did nothing in Asia so they are bringing him back to be Nelson's executive assistant aka lackey. Why this merits a big press release, I do not know… It was a silly move to send Mike to Asia in the first place – what was he doing moving to Australia and not Singapore or Thailand? Asian sales requires contacts, Mike had none. Giving Mike China for a while was the height of stupidity, he had no contacts in China. Mike is lucky, he gets to stay on the sales gravy train with the high salaries, commissions for taking orders for legacy sales, and free “Center of Excellence” trips.

Here is Nortel’s official press release headline —“Nortel* [NYSE/TSX: NT] today announced the appointment of Michael Pangia as senior vice-president, Global Sales Operations and Strategy”

Is George Riedel demoted to Chief ‘Other-than-Global’ Strategy Officer? Hmmm, the long knives and it’s not even March.
