Nortel May Dump Sasken Stake

According to India’s The Financial Express, Nortel may be planning on selling its 11.31% stake in Sasken Communication Technologies Ltd., a Bangalore-based telecom R&D firm that Nortel invested $10-million in three years ago.

Sasken, which has worked with Nortel since 1991 on many of its GSM technologies, may back the stake back from Nortel. Its board meets later this week.

Obviously they are going to need the cash generated by the sale of their Sasken share to pay for the 2008 management bonuses.

    BT Reconsiders PBT Plans

BT Group plc (NYSE: BT - message board; London: BTA), to date the most committed supporter of Provider Backbone Transport (PBT), is having second thoughts about how widely deployed the controversial Ethernet technology might be in its 21CN next-generation network.
    ....................
If that is the outcome, it would be disappointing news for Nortel, PBT's chief tub-thumper, and a relief for the trio of MPLS equipment vendors involved in 21CN -- Alcatel-Lucent (NYSE: ALU - message board), Cisco Systems Inc. (Nasdaq: CSCO - message board), and Juniper Networks Inc. (Nasdaq: JNPR - message board) -- which, to varying degrees, have been campaigning against PBT for the past two years.
