Hats Off to Bo Gowan and Mark Buford

My new heros at Nortel: Bo Gowan and Mark Buford, who are co-writing a relatively new Nortel corporate blog called Nortel Buzzboard.

These guys are bringing it. (I’m watching the Raptors crush the Heat so apologies for the basketball analogy!). I like their stuff. It’s interesting, real and, most important, they’re working it like real bloggers – a nice tag cloud, links to external sources and even – wait for it – a blogroll that features All About Nortel.

I give Nortel some kudos – and, as you know, that doesn’t happen very often – for doing something creative and progressive. The number of companies with real or even quasi-real blogs is, sadly, few and far between. We’re, what, three years into the blogging revolution, and far too many businesses still don’t get it or, for that matter, social media.

So, hat’s off to Nortel, Buford and Gowan for stepping up at a time when a lot of people are wondering what Nortel wants to be.

(And thanks for the putting ANN on your blogroll. Not sure how you got it past your bosses but it’s pretty cool. If ANN could also get on the blogrolls of John Roese and Phil Edholm, that would be a coup!)

    Bo,

Thank you. I hope you have a thick skin, and some asbestos underwear

I suspect it might become a "honey pot" for comments. Unfortunately mostly negative. I hope that the company has the fortitude to take the criticism. IMO a lot of it is very valid.

It might allow people to vent and get legitimate answers, so I think the blog is ultimately a good idea.
  • Absolutely Buzzboard is open to comments from people outside Nortel. We want your comments and your feedback.

my question is; are Mark and Bo opening comment up to outsiders? I guess they are, but the site seems to be caternig more to the employees (most seem to busy or too fearful to post).

It reminds me of the "gossip" site BNR used to have on the IBM 3270s (circa 1980) If you are in fact asking for outside opion, I agree hats, off. Your site is opening the windows to fresh air.

Fearless and brilliant are certainly heroic qualities to be sure, and I too applaud him.

He isn't shy to lock horns with sophists at a level far beyond mere tech heads which indicates to me they may be very upper management. that are concerned with Nortel branding and views expressed in, or surprisingly outside of, his blog.

Congrats to the both of you, you are many people's heros.

Reality and the truth is often elicited by balancing the consensus or differing views that are minimally very interesting, short of outright fascinating to many in this saga.

Thanks to the both of you for allowing us to romanticize our humble opinions on your ever so superb soap boxes, unlike the totalitarian Roman Empire with no fear of executing the bearer of bad news=) The blogs are ultra informative that allow for rare input that may otherwise go unnoticed. The moral majority stands united and honesty draws no fire here.

I am sure many greatly appreciate these blogs and have the greatest respect, admiration, and affection for the both of you.

    congrats fellas!

"Not sure how you got it past your bosses"

All ya gotta do is chose the 401k stock purchase plan.
  • Thanks for the kind words Mark. We're still getting our blogger legs under us, but its nice to know someone out there likes what we've done so far. I must say we did a little high five last week when you added Buzzboard to your blog roll. Quite frankly getting some airtime on your site is one of the best ways to raise awareness for what we are doing since you have such a large readership.
  • Bo,

    Keep up the good work!

    Mark
