Roese Back in the Media Spotlight

    By Mark Evans | December 26, 2007

    John Roese
Nortel CTO John Roese had a pretty good media run in 206 but then he seemed to disappear from the spotlight. (Maybe he was focusing on his blog…and the 12,000 engineers, scientists and designers he oversees.)

For anyone looking for Roese taking where networks are going, the wireless market, and why Google is bidding for spectrum, check out this Q&A that he did with Forbes.com.

Wow, he sure backed off talking up Wimax. If a big win was on the way I would think he would have talked up Wimax, and why it is the best….

Ho hummm. All been said before. I guess it’s just the general sales principle; tell ‘em what your gonna tell ‘em, tell ‘em, tell ‘em what you told ‘em.

It does seem that nortel has stepped up the rhetoric toward cisco again.

Mike Z, time for dinner with the 7 analyst that rate Nortel a Buy from the Reuters service at http://stocks.us.reuters.com/stocks/recommendations.asp?symbol=NT&WTmodLOC=L2-LeftNav-24-Recommendations …. need the “brain trust” to assist in the exit strategy / Nortel BUYER …. bankruptcy is not an option …. don’t like the comparisons to Stelco and Air Canada …. Get-R-Done !!

      nortelhand,

The reason that he backed off on WIMAX is that Nortel is going to exit WIMAX soon. Not a big market and few wins for Nortel. You heard it here first!

BTW - Roese is a complete blowhard with absolutely no influence on technology within Nortel. He is basically a Nerd-Spokesmodel.

tray - Since when has the nortel cto *ever* had any influence on technology? Technology direction is run completely by the old-boy product manager/vp silo fiefdoms.

The amount of money wasted on competing interests within the company is still staggering (as witnessed by the number of directors/vp to line employee ratio), but these little fiefdoms *will never* give up their hegemonic power and control game.

Even the GE czars are not really running things (though they have convinced themselves they are).

If nortel were able to focus their energies on a market they could out compete most companies I can think of, but I have lost a lot of hope lately. Especially since my perspective is now from the customer side.

As far as wi-max 802.16 goes, it is in the process of being merged with LTE as a standard. Nortel will not play a very big role (if any)

Motley fool lists nortel on their “deathbed stocks” list. Although this proclamation may be exaggerated, nortel continuers to be marginalized and is probably a bit player (pun intended) http://www.fool.com/investing/general/2007/12/28/5-deathbed-stocks.aspx

The best is moot. With the size of recession on the horizon, service providers are going to focus on getting by with what they have and with minimal technology increments for any expansions.

WiMax is five years too late.

There is going to be a graceful backing off by everyone in the WiMax game over the next year.

      tray and many,

I just read your comments after posting mine. I’m glad to see others on the same page.

Al Javed, who was a big push for WiMax at Nortel a few years ago exited a year or so ago for TenXc.

      I wonder what’s happening there?
