Solid Results Expected From Cisco

October 30th, 2007 · 1 Comment

UBS Securities analyst Nikos Theodosopoulos is expecting “solid” first-quarter results from Cisco, despite weak enterprise sales in the U.S.
“Strength in the quarter was likely driven by U.S. federal, global SMB, global telco IP spending, European enterprise, and emerging markets,” he said in a research report. “Soft spots were likely U.S. enterprise (retail & financial verticals) [...]

The Economist takes a look at the struggles of the major telecom suppliers, highlighted by Alcatel-Lucent, which is expected to post “ugly” quarterly results next week.
There’s nothing terribly new in the story but The Economist does a good job of highlighting the key issues facing players such as Alcatel-Lucent, Ericsson and Nortel.
1. The wireless market [...]

October 25th, 2007 · 7 Comments

There’s an interesting - and somewhat breathless - story in yesterday’s Globe & Mail looking at the exciting future of Wi-Max, which “promises to do what the cellphone did for phone calls”.
While I love the concept of Wi-Max (high-speed wireless connectivity to compete against the cablecos and carriers), let’s just see how the technology can [...]

Nortel Still Leading R&D Player

October 24th, 2007 ·

Canada’s leading research and development companies spent 3.8% less in 2006, according to Research Infosource Inc. - which really begs the question why it took nearly 10 months to compile this information given we live in a digital age where information is more readily available than ever before.
Nortel continues to be the leading R&D player [...]

Not sure about Edholm’s title but he describes himself as being responsible for technology vision, strategy, and architecture across the enterprise product portfolio. Given Nortel’s [...]

October 22nd, 2007 · 1 Comment

Some interesting factoids complements of Neil Murray in the London Free Press:
- RIM currently accounts for a 72% weighting in the TSX technology sector. However, it’s overall weighting within the TSX is 3.5%, compared with Nortel, which was well over 30% during the peak of the telecom boom in 2000.
- RIM’s market capitalization is [...]

Nortel Reads….

October 21st, 2007 · 9 Comments

A couple of, well, interesting reads for Nortel watchers:
- The Regina-Leader Post ran a “story” by Kevin Johnston (a branch manager for Scotia McLeod) about how Nortel’s prospects appear promising now that its accounting and legal woes are finally behind it.
Johnston does some math based on what analysts expects Nortel to make in 2008 ($1.14 [...]
