      Nortel Looks Good at NXTComm

      By Mark Evans | June 22, 2007

TD Securities analyst Chris Umiastowski recently attended the NXTComm 2007 conference, and came away impress with Nortel. In particular, he said Nortel is showing some good traction with its PBT carrier ethernet solution, as well as its optical transport portfolio (Imagine that, interest in optical again!)

Umiastowski said the opportunities for PBT sales could be bolstered by Verizon, which is poised to issue a request for proposal. If Verizon commits itself to PBT, Umiastowski said it would be a huge blow to MPLS players, Alcatel and Cisco. “We had several data points that lead us to believe Verizon is supportive of PBT, and although Nortel executives did not name any new carriers, we were told that a ‘big tier 1 carrier’ was preparing to launch an RFP,” Umiastowski wrote in a recent research report. “If Nortel is successful with PBT in the carrier ethernet market, it is entirely possible to see the company produce $1-billion in annual sales of this type of equipment by 2010.”

Another area where Umiastowski believes Nortel has good prospects is IPTV. He believes the market is still wide open because no supplier has demonstrated it can produce a “massively scaleable solution” and there is no clear-cut market leader yet.
