    Podcast with CTO John Roese

    By Mark Evans | May 22, 2007

Want to hear the hyper-connectivity story straight from the horse’s mouth - or, in this case, the CTO’s mouth? Telephony Magazine has a podcast with Nortel’s John Roese.

First, John; there are decaffeinated brands that taste just as good :)

He makes some good points, but it is difficult to digest everything he said in that short time (I kept wondering if he is the hyper in hyper connectivity). I got the sense that it could be said in a simpler way like; we know we are making progress because the network is becoming more like us rather than the other way around, but maybe that is not true either.

I think another important point he did not make is what happens to these applications when they all collide in a hyper connected world? How is the applications behaviour changed? Will it interact and play nice with other applications or will it become a real PitA?

      Lots to think about.

The points Roese makes in the podcast are valid, but I have two feedback points: 1) Roese more than once makes the point that “the service providers need to recognize this or do that…”. From what I see, the major service providers on all continents are ahead of Nortel in their thinking and are heading down various implementation paths. The service providers are too fixated on IMS, but other than that they’re behaving pretty aggressively these days. 2) The podcast is a re-run. We’ve heard the messages before. What we haven’t heard yet is anything associated with a meaningful implementation plan. I think Roese needs to spend more time in the Nortel business silos.
