Did Nortel Win over Cisco

According to someone who reads Gokul Blog, Nortel’s recent contract to provide with Mexico’s Telmex with IP telephony and multimedia services came at the expense of Cisco, which was battling to win the deal. For more details on why Nortel prevailed, check out the post.

Given a key sentence in the Press Release about this deal, I think this was as much a business decision as it was a product or technology decision. The sentence is:

“Under an agreement announced today, Nortel is supplying a complete, end-to-end IP services solution from the Nortel Global Services portfolio using network equipment owned and managed by Nortel.”

The way I read it is that this is an Outsourced Services deal rather than a product sales deal. It has the opportunity to generate a nice recurring revenue stream for Nortel Global Services.

Speaking over services, it looks as though Nortel is getting more and more away from its core competency of building network equipment and willing to offer services to anyone who needs it even if their entire infrastructure is based on Cisco.
