Nortel Scores U.S. Wi-Max Deal
By Mark Evans | April 25, 2007
Nortel has established its first foothold - albeit a small one - in the U.S. Wi-Max market after reaching a deal with Quad-Cities Online to provide high-speed wireless access to customers in western Illinois and eastern Iowa. The deal will let Quad-Cities move many of its several thousand dial-up users to a high-speed connection. The ISP will operate its network over a 2.5GHz spectrum leased from a local college. In return, Quad-Cities will give the college access to 30% of its network for its own services and telecom needs. Nortel has been looking for a foothold in the U.S. Wi-Max market after failing to be among the suppliers selected by Sprint, which is spending $4-billion to create a broadband wireless network.
