Anyone looking for some insight into Nortel’s Wi-max strategy may be interested in an interview that chief technology officer John Roese gave to Computer World.
I can’t help but feel that Nortel is grabbing at straws when it comes to WiMAX.
Nortel keeps touting its IP portfolio. I don’t know how much is reality and how much is hype, although I suspect it leans to the latter. Does it really matter anyway? Nortel is quite a bit behind in product implementation, regardless of its IP.
In Roese’s interview and Peter McKinnon (head of WiMAX) recent keynote address at WimAX World, they both tout the current Sprint RFP, as if Nortel was the frontrunner to get that business, which, by the way, is the only significant carrier business available today. Again more hype than reality. One of the key players at Sprint is Mark Whitton, the former head of Nortel WiMAX. I don’t know if that makes it easier for Nortel. I suspect not.

Nortel technology shaped the world several times in this last century. For sure it’s going to do it again and again.
As for every change, lots of people will probably lose their career for not being able to embrace the new reality. Those are the people now fighting against the change and insulting every trace of it.
