No Middle Ground on NT-MSFT Deal

    By Mark Evans | July 20, 2006

Local Techwire has a round up on the reaction to Nortel’s four-year deal with Microsoft involving unified communications. Among the most critical people is tech curmudgeon John Dvorak, who goes after Nortel CEO Mike Zafirovski’s strategy to focus on software and services. “I knew there was a serious problem with marijuana in Canada,” Dvorak wrote. “I just knew it.” Other industry watchers such as Forbes.com like the deal. Only will tell if this strategic relationship actually leads to significant business or whether it’s just one of those partnership announcements that never go anywhere.

“He also dismissed Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer’s contention that business communications will become web centric. “The notion that the web can reliably handle ‘all’ business communications is a laugh,” he said.”

“Using that last fluff comment from Ballmer was the topper since there was not one balanced remark in any of these news accounts such as, “Hey, are you telling me that the mobile phone is dead and won’t be used for business at all? Puh-leeeze!”"

Doesn’t this guy realize that mobiles will be client based (such as using MSN Messenger on your mobile to make voice calls) and all voice traffic will be IP? It’s not that far off. Sure there will be a lot of legacy circuit switched equipment used in developing countries over the next 10yrs, but the majority of mobile or land calls in developed nations will be routed over the “web”. The marketing buzzword for this is called “convergance” and it is starting to happen.
