    Breakup the Yankees….and Maybe Nortel

    Friday, June 23rd, 2006

It’s just a thought and perhaps it comes from way out in left field (apologies for the baseball analogies) but what if Nortel was sold in pieces rather than trying to get bigger through an acquisition or joint venture? So speculates Orion Securities analyst Duncan Stewart, who suggests a sum-of-the-parts analysis indicates "Nortel disassembled may [...]

    Last Call for Nortel?

    Friday, June 23rd, 2006

SmartMoney.com has a story looking at Nortel's prospects in the wake of the Nokia-Siemens joint venture. There's not a lot you haven't read elsewhere but one eye-catching paragraph is an assertion the only way Nortel can compete with the "Holy Trinity" of Alcatel/Lucent, Siemens/Nokia and Ericsson is to "miraculously grow its company to the same [...]

    Nortel Hires CTO…Finally

    Thursday, June 22nd, 2006

Nortel has hired John Roese as chief technology officer - a year after Gary Kunis stepped down along side COO Gary Daichendt. Nortel poached Roese away from Broadcom where he had been CTO for less than six months. No doubt, Broadcom can’t be too pleased with Roese’s decision but it looks like another solid senior [...]

    Motorola Acquires Tellabs?

    Thursday, June 22nd, 2006

Amid scuttlebutt of a deal between Motorola and Nortel, Merrilly Lynch suggests Motorola could acquire Tellabs Inc. for cash. "We believe that Motorola is looking to acquire a wireline vendor, and the profile highlighted by management seems to fit Tellabs the most," the report said. "Management has not executed on its stated plan to buy [...]

According to Bloomberg, Nortel is expected to offer the highest yields in 15 years to convince enough investors to purchase $2 billion of junk bonds this month. The yield on Nortel's 6.875% due in 2023 has risen about 100 basis points to 8.3% since May. "A lot of deals aren't doing well out of the [...]

    Wednesday, June 21st, 2006

After reaching agreements to settle two Canadian lawsuits, Nortel has completed the settlement of two major class-action lawsuits in the U.S. for $2.47-billion. The deal includes $575-million in cash and 14.5% of Nortel’s common shares.

    Siemens-Nortel….Part II

    Wednesday, June 21st, 2006

Well, it's official: Siemens' enterprise business is on the block with Nortel and Avaya seen as the frontrunners. So does this explain why Nortel CEO Mike Zafirovski has been so bullish about the enterprise business with his assertions the market wants a viable alternative to Cisco? If a deal with Siemens materialized, you'd probably be [...]

    Siemens Talking to Nortel, Avaya?

    Tuesday, June 20th, 2006

Dow Jones is reporting that Siemens is in "intensive talks" with Nortel and Avaya about the sale of its enterprise networks business. "Siemens has been in talks with both companies for a while now," Dow Jones quotes "one of these people close the German company". To my earlier post about Nortel have to deal with [...]

    Record Traffic!

    Tuesday, June 20th, 2006

Nothing like big news to drive traffic. The Siemens-Nokia joint venture announcement saw more than 1,300 visitors yesterday. Now if Techmeme.com would only discover All Nortel, All the Time, life would be really good.

    More Deep Strategic Thoughts

    Tuesday, June 20th, 2006

In the aftermath of the Nokia-Siemens joint venture news, there’s all kinds of speculation about what Nortel should do. Upon reflection, perhaps the best move - at least from an M&A perspective - is nothing. Frankly, Nortel still has too many of its own problems to fix before it goes looking to make an acquisition (a [...]
