Why Mike Z. Took the Job

If you were at all curious about Mike Zafirovski decided to become Nortel's CEO, he came clean yesterday after a speech at a conference in North Carolina. "I would go with a small company and grow it, or I could go to a tarnished icon and rebuilt it," he said. "Obviously, Nortel fits into the second category." Of course, it doesn't hurt that Nortel was willing to give Mike Z. a very lucrative compensation package, complete with a nice salary, stock options and a $500,000 a year retirement package. Then, there's the profile of working for a world-class company such as Nortel versus a small, upstart battling for business. For more, click here.

the world class co is also battling for business. the only difference is that the small co is more focused and can move more quickly to generate new business.

I think Mike took the job so he could grease the skids for an economical takeover by CISCO. That’s the reason they dumped the CISCO twins and CISCO is behind Mike all the way. I could be wrong about this but I’ve been thinking it for abot a year now — and, a CISCO takeover just gets more plausible all the time. Moreover, LU is going to be perceived as a French Company one of these days and this will result in a great windfall of business for CISCO/NT. I plan to buy all the NT I can when it hits about 50 cents a share.
